Device with standard SD
« on: October 06, 2014, 07:53:48 PM »
Are there any device supported that have a standard (full sized) SD card support?

I know the Cowon D2 has, but it's out of production and might be a challenge to get hold of.

May I ask as to why having a full size SD slot is important?

I'm genuinely curious, full size SD realistically hasn't anything to offer a digital audio player that microSD doesn't, and with microSD UHS-II speeds are comparable unless you're looking into the world of ridiculously expensive cards for photography professionals, though I'm given to believe that compact flash is still a widely used format in that area.

The two technologies (digital audio players, and full size SD) didn't really overlap much. mini/microSD (or TransFlash as it was called, and sometimes still is) was becoming a lot more prevalent during the time when flash based digital audio players were becoming more common.

In fact, I am only personally aware of two devices which were reasonably common (though still fairly obscure) that have full size SD, one of them (the Cowon D2) has already been mentioned, and the other (SanDisk Sansa View) hasn't received any developer interest at all barring some firmware disassembly to confirm the makeup of the device, and signature verification (to make sure arbitrary execution with a modified firmware was possible), and that was some seven or eight years ago now.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Some of the creative devices also have full sd cards in them that work fine albeit not marked as stable.

One reason for SD over uSD may be the capacity. SD might be available in double capacity over uSD. The other reason might be that it is easier to handle SD over uSD. I've lost several uSD and no SD. You may write a label on SD, which is not case of uSD. And uSD tends to jump out in some devices (and get lost even if you notice it right away.) For older people it might be close to impossible to insert uSD in the device because of eyesight and clumsy hands...

So, if you need to change the card, SD is more convenient than uSD, in my opinion.

I want one with a full size sd as I have a sd card with a built in wifi card. When the card powers up and if it detects my home network it syncs music off my server and if not it quietly powers off. Probably not a common issue but it works for me. I am just having a hard time finding players wit the full size card.
