How do I put songs onto the player

Relatively new to the player and love the additional functionality so far.

Today I went to add some songs to the player (instead of putting them directly onto the SD card) and I realized the player doesn't show up in My Computer!
I read the manual, and thought maybe I needed to put the player back into MSC mode. I booted back into the Sansa player (why oh why doesn't this setting appear in Rockbox?) and switched to MSC. Still, the player would not appear in My Computer.

What am I doing wrong?

The slightly longer way around this would be to copy songs to your SD card, then copy them to the internal memory via Rockbox's copy/paste functionality.

maybe I needed to put the player back into MSC mode.

I thought rockbox required MSC mode for installation - if so, how did it get out of MSC mode?
I have a clip zip and, in windows 7, the device appears as a removable USB drive (as does its SD card, separately) when it's plugged in.  Does your computer react at all when the player is plugged in?  Does the player react?  More details would be helpful.
