iPod Classic 6G 160GB (2007): Questions about patches - experimental mods
X-Tech:
Thanks to all who replied and mentioned here desirable informations;) i am sure that Rockbox manual will answer many questions but on another side it is really large document. I think that i can control Rockbox as good as much i invest my time into it. And that is the question..
Anyway, Rockbox is a complex toy. Most of stuff or better say user stuff as an advanced PC user i do understand. But understanding many other things definitely means to go deeper, under the shell and become more as theunamedguy mentioned. More and more i use it i appreciate this project. Rockbox is very capable..
c/ applying patches seems to me (as for simple Rockbox user) a frontier - to manage that i need to have more knowledges and skills. I am affraid i can't manage that with my actaul knowledges of Rockbox - i am not advanced Roxbox user. Well, i thought that i can "easily" copy the content of the patch to the source code (but don t know where exactly, etc.). I thought i can manage that pretty fast but this site "Working With Patches" tells me it really needs more than some time.
f/ with Doom fix it seems to me same as with patching topic. I checked the site about it but it did not tell me a lot. It it seems to me complicated, do not know where to start (it is not easy as to install some .zip file). But if i am wrong correct me.
(anyway playing Doom on my Classic has really no priority. I was just curios.)
g/ and same it goes with customizing boot image - compile my own Rockbox binary. Well, this is too much for me to manage that at the moment;)
i/ about emCORE settings. Ok, i understand that Rockbox has officialy nothing to do with this contribution. I will try to post my questions on freemyipod team. But i think that somebody of you here will know what those emCORE entries "Clear Rockbox configuration", "Clear Rockbox database" means. It is obvious what does it mean after the title but some detailed explanation will help. Maybe there is something special about that.
m/ well, animated battery meter for my used "AAFreak" theme is not such a big problem.
I will try to redescribe my question/problem with charging.
After i plug my iPod to USB port for charge there is no automatic screen telling me that my iPod is under charging process what is not good because i can t get simple overview for my charging process. But as it was said - this port is in its infancy. The truth is that when i turn on my plugged iPod then the battery icon in emCORE main screen change to icon similar to status " charged on 100%" what tells me that "something happens" and my iPod is under charging process (without this animated meter).
Till now i had no time to check if my iPod's battery is charged without turning iPod on (just after plugging it to USB cable).
As you mention, there is some fix for it. Well, is it this: http://www.rockbox.org/tracker/task/12522?string=classic
n/ and one more thing. I don t know if it is a matter of settings but i noticed this: when any song inside of my file tree is over and iPod playback stops i can t get back (through "Files" option from man Menu) to the folder of this last played song, album etc. - i can t get back to this position, i have to browse trough my files from the beggining! It works while the album (or song) is played but when a song stops i miss the link to the folder position! This is very annoying for me.. But maybe there is some setting that i missed. Let me know, please.
Thanks for answers!

This is wrong. I gave you the answer to the question you asked - which you know realize to be correct - twice! So I did say something, I answered your question. You are basically just complaining that you didn't like the answer.

Well yes, you do just add the patch to the source code and compile. In that sense it is very easy, although setting up the tools to compile may not be easy for you depending on how much experience you have. The bigger problem most people have is that the patches they want to apply are very old or no longer applicable. So they go through the effort of patching only to find out that they are already included.

I don't know about that software, but from what you describe probably it just deletes the files associated with those things from the hard disk.

There is no charging screen or anything like that in rockbox. Has nothing to do with your device, we just don't do that. You'll see an icon in your WPS showing that the player is charging.

X-Tech,
You need to understand how frustrating it is for us to manage user support here when someone (yourself) who later admits to having no clue what they are talking about, attempts to tell senior members that they are incorrect.
None of us get paid for this.
Most of us have full time jobs.
We do this because we enjoy it.
When someone who we are trying to offer support to tells us that we are wrong based on what they assume to be correct, or refuses to or is incapable of accepting the support given, it doesn't make it particularly enjoyable for us. It leaves little desire to want to continue offering support to that person.
saratoga's response was a direct reflection of this frustration. Had he not beaten me to it, I would have replied in an entirely similar fashion. You requested support, got an answer from not one but two people, and then told them they were wrong...when you had no way of being able to confirm this.
I hope you can understand how truly frustrating and annoying that is.
Regarding emCORE, yes, you're quite correct - someone here will know the answers you seek. I do, in fact. But that does not change the fact that this is not the right place to seek support for this completely unrelated project.
Would you call Burger King for support for your Big Mac?
Or call Google for support for your iPhone?
...its the same thing.
We may know the answers, but that doesn't mean this is the right place to request support. Please respect this decision.
And, finally:

Actually, no, he won't.
We aren't capable of detecting the charge state presently, patch pending.
One will, however, be able to view the current battery capacity reported, and be able to see very clearly if it is full or not.

X-Tech:
Hello,
sorry for my late answer but i had no time to react earlier.
to: Saratoga
Ok, sorry to you - of course i see you answered me on my previous questions and i thank you for that. But my note was just about your last input here what seemed to me kind of strange. But never mind now, i think it will be shame to disturb this discussion with this kind of topic. It is not necessary. Well, i think that it is much better to focus directly on discussion about Rockbox issues. Thanks for your answers!
to: [Saint]
I have huge respect for the team of Rockbox! (i did mention that in my previous inputs so it is obvious what way i think and feel about Rockbox). It is clear to me that keep Rockbox alive and maintain it (incl. support) means to invest lot of individual (spare)time into it and mainly it is pleasure to that. Since the beginning i start to write here on this forum i have nothing than respect for all the members they are involved in this project. I know it is for free and it is built on enthusiam of all the members.
Again, sorry that it might seemed to you that i try to "teach" someone here. Maybe i should choose better formulation of my question and expression. But on another side sometimes missed me direct answers what might caused this interferrence (i didn't tell anybody he is wrong, please). Well, whole this thing was about that i didn't know (and still do not know) if i can install patches in prooved builds and if i do then how (vs. source code). Now i understand that if some build contains Patches folder it means they are involved in '.rockbox' (source code).
And about emCORE topic. I definitely knew and know that this project is something different. But as you did mention i tried to ask beacuse emCORE it is very related with Rockbox on iPod Classic (without emCORE Rockbox it is impossible to run on iPod Classic). I know that i have no guarantee to get answers here about emCORE but i tried to ask because i suppose that some people have empiric experiences with this (logically). If someone shares his knowledge about that it is on his own decision and good will. Again, i think that this thread might help to get answers to other people, not just to me;)
X-Tech:
From many of my points there are actually four points to resolve:
c/ so for now it seems i will try to check (install) this modified build i have to get these patches. For separate installation of patches into new builds i need to know much more about Rockbox and as Saratoga explained in last input sometimes it could be a waste of time.)
Anyway, i have got an answer from developer of one patch and he will write me more information soon. So i wait for his words.
i/ about emCORE. If there is anybody who is able to explain & describe me exactly menu entries ("Clear Rockbox configuration", "Clear Rockbox database", etc..) i will appreciate this. After a title it is clear what it is for but i am wondering what happens exactly to my iPod Classic after application of those entries.
Anyway, as i wrote i am going to post my questions also on freemyipod team.
m/ charging screen & status. Ok, so if i understand good the charging screen - for checking present status - on iPod Classic is possible after installation of needed patch. Probably it is the one i did mention here in my previous posts: ipod6g-powermgmt.patch.20140326.
While animated battery status icon itself is a matter of skin in usage. And speaking about battery icon during charging process i have to note that emCORE bootloader has animated battery status icon (it is dynamical but in atypical way; it uses different method from average mobile phone i/we know). And if i go across emCORE during charging process to Rockbox the battery icon for actual charging process (in my skin AAFreak) is not dynamical - it only shows actual position of charge (it is static). So there is in general hard or better say weird way to find out on first sight what is the actual state of my charging process on iPod Classic. The onliest way to find it exactly it is to find it in "System > Battery" info. But it needs to have iPod turned on and turned on with "Menu" button (operational). Well, i think that this battery issues on iPod Classic they are the onliest ones i would like to see improved/reworked as they are inconvenient and unnoticed.
I am sure that this issue is know. I hope that i will be able to fix major part from this issue with this power management patch.
n/ i did mention this point i my previous post. I don t know if it is a matter of settings but i noticed this: when any song inside of my file tree is over and iPod playback stops i can t get back (through "Files" option from main Menu) to the folder of this last played song, album etc. - i can t get back to this position, i have to browse trough my files from the beggining! In other words 'memory effect' is lost. It works while the album (or song) is played but when a song stops i miss the link to the folder position! This is very kind of annoying to me. But maybe there is some setting that i missed (i hope there is). Can you let me know, please.
Again, many thanks for your replies
