iPod Nano 2g 8gb Lockup randomly
« on: August 26, 2014, 04:20:38 PM »
Hello, problem with my rockboxed iPod is as mentioned in a title, rockbox lockup randomly, mainly in sets which have for example about 1 hour. One time iPod play normally next time after lets say about 30 minutes it freezes, sometimes with special sound effects.. And after lockup i have to reset iPod and it get backs to track which were played before last play.

I hope you know how to fix that problem because im considering to moving back to Fuze again because official iPod soft is not so good with bass.

Regards John

Problem from the topic still persist but now appears rarely. But i succesfully fixed bass distrotion problem by installing MP3Gain and setting db of the tracks to -82

Uuuuuugh. MP3Gain is terrible*.

ID3v* replaygain frames are a much better alternative for cases where the host OS supports replaygain, which these days, should be almost always. This is definitely the case for Rockbox, at least.
In my opinion, MP3Gain is only really useful if the host doesn't support replaygain.

In an open-source project with multiple contributors, there is no "project as a whole" - everyone's got a different opinion ;)

While that may be true for rockbox, it's definitely not true in general

I don't think its true even for Rockbox, personally.

Why MP3Gain is terrible? Do you know any better solution and how to apply ID3v to tracks?

mp3gain is OK if you know what you're doing. It can write replaygain tags, but IIRC by default it directly adjusts the file, which isn't ideal.

What's your recipes for MP3Gain? -82 sounds like sound is cutted and lost its dynamic power on iPod Video 5g now : ) im testing all iPods ;p damn this iPod Video is HUGE

Is MP3Gain cutting to -82db process reversible?

That's incredibly difficult to say, as like all tools, there's a variety of implementations with various brokenness.

MP3Gain is definitely _supposed_ to save ID3v* tags with information that would allow reversing the process, but in practice, this is not always the case. So, all I can really say is that it should be reversible, but it may not be, at least not trivially.

I think you'll find it particularly difficult to find someone that actually uses MP3Gain and can give you definitive answers, due to the points outlined in prior posts. The reasonably widespread adoption of replaygain made it virtually irrelevant. Its only particularly useful on ancient or obscure hardware that doesn't support replaygain for whatever reason.
