Help bootloader won't intstal
« on: August 04, 2014, 05:37:37 AM »
So here is the situation:

I tried using the utility tool for installing rockbox on my ipod classic 160gb it keeps on showing the triple line error that the access was denied. this only happens when the boot loader is checked otherwise it just installs. but ofc without a boot loader rockbox won't start up.

I also tried the manual option but the ipod patcher shows:
[ERR]  FATAL: Permission denied on 2 device(s) and no ipod detected.
[ERR]  You need permissions for raw disc access for this program to work!

If run in root i get this:
[INFO] Scanning disk devices...
[ERR]  No ipods found, aborting
[ERR]  Please connect your ipod and ensure it is in disk mode
[ERR]  Also ensure that itunes is closed, and that your ipod is not mounted.
[ERR]  Please refer to the Rockbox manual if you continue to have problems.

Side info:
Years ago on my old ipod I used rockbox and enjoyed it very much, that ipod past away and got replaced. i remember the installation being very easy.

I run on mac and also tried using the emcore instal on my paralel desktop but that also fails

So please help....

The Rockbox utility does not support installing the bootloader (emCORE) for the iPod Classic yet. You need to install it manually. An installation wizard is available to guide you through this process: http://www.freemyipod.org/wiki/EmCORE_Installation

After a day of thinking and trying different things i finally got the emcore way working.

Second problem: It now won't show up on my mac when plugged in, ipod freezes and has to be restarted.

Also the collecting database stays on 345 found I'm also reading the manual from front to back but havent seem to found a reason yet.

I remember that the version that comes bundled with emCORE was rather buggy, especially with USB. You will want to install a development build.

Well done. Welcome to the community.

In this thread I give a detailed breakdown of the problem and working around this issue here (it is a bit technical, and long winded, which is why I'm linking to the thread), and another user provides a patched binary* to work around the issue.

This is completely expected behaviour, but I can understand it being extremely non-obvious.
Since you can't mount the device, you haven't been able to put any media on it, so there is nothing for the database to catalogue. This is a case that we absolutely could handle better, but it is generally expected that the user will have some media on the device before attempting to initialize the database.
The file count you see will be that of Rockbox/emCORE's internal structure.

This is simply not the case. The version that is bunbled with emCORE is bundled with emCORE specifically because it is known to be the best candidate at the present point in time. In many cases users using current development builds of Rockbox need to use the embedded Rockbox fallback image in order to mount their devices on Windows hosts.

This is demonstrably the opposite of your claims.

Wrong again! :-[
But still, if you were using a version with a different VID/PID from the iPod, it would work, so I'm not completely wrong, right? :)

Well First of all Thank you very much, Yesterday evening I restored my ipod to the official firmware. But i'm not willing to give up even though I have no experience with codes what so ever ( except codes like: up down triangle squire xxxx down up)
Tonight when im home I will give it a go and see where it lands.

I do have some questions in advance.
Do you advice installing linux as a parallel desktop on my mac or steal my dads windows 8 laptop to give it a go?
After your detailed explanation of which my girl and I had a few laughs there is a post from Copper saying:

I'm now hosting a daily build of (vanilla) Rockbox for the iPod Classic with the USB Vendor and Product IDs changed to 0x123A and 0x456B respectively, which aren't currently assigned.

http://caudec.net/rockbox/latest/rockbox-ipod6g-usbid_0x123A_0x456B.zip

Here's the corresponding patch:
http://caudec.net/rockbox/latest/rockbox-ipod6g-usbid_0x123A_0x456B.diff

Am i right to assume that if I find a way to install that vanilla version of rockbox with the patch that the problem should be gone but the usb code is not that of a external storage device?

Looking forward to your answers and again thank you for your explanation and effort to help!

You are correct, absolutely unsupported binaries from a third party are located here (spoke with the maintainer and figured out why the link I tried to use is dead). At least for the time being.

EDIT: If you're as blind as I am, finding what you're looking for on said page may be extremely non-obvious. Search the page for "iPod Classic (with the USBID patch for OS Ⅹ):".
EDIT 2: I forgot to explain the fact that the USBID is pretty much irrelevant (both the vendor and product IDs used in the patched binary are unassigned, so there won't be {or _shouldn't_ be} any conflict), we just don't want the OS to know its an iPod and try and treat it differently.
EDIT Seventy-eleventy-nineteen: typos galore.

You don't need to do anything at all with the patch.

The binary you installed includes that patch, the patch is given only to meet Rockbox's licensing requirements. That patch would perhaps be useful to you if you were to want to compile your own binary, but if that is not the case you can simply ignore it.

Remember that if you update Rockbox with a binary that does not include this change (ie. the official Rockbox binaries), you'll be back to square one again and your Mac will try to speak silly proprietary iPod whispers to it instead of simply treating it as removable storage.
