WARNING! Uninstaller doesn't work properly, reinstall of original firmware fails
« on: August 03, 2014, 05:12:34 AM »
During uninstalling I got a failure message, bootloader could not be removed, original firmware has to be reinstalled manually. Trying to reinstall original firmware with Sandisk updater fails. Trying manual reinstall (putting original firmware file in players root directory) fails!

Now I get following message on the display:

*PANIC*
Unhandled masked IR
Q 03: INT_USB (status 0x00000008)
Many thanks to the Rockbox Developers team for rendering my MP3 player unusable!  >:( >:( >:(

Which means there is no problem with Rockbox Utility here. It didn't uninstall the bootloader because it can't do it (sparing the reasons right now since they don't matter here). You thread subject "warning" of uninstalling not working properly is plain wrong, and misleading at best for others looking at this thread.

So this is a problem of the Sandisk firmware update process. Not a Rockbox issue, and not a Rockbox Utility issue either.

Which means that (a) your player crashed and (b) Rockbox (or the Rockbox bootloader) is running. This is not really a major problem.

Well, the state your player is in isn't problematic, and it's quite easy to resurrect it. I'd really suggest you to check your attitude -- while I could write up on this situation I'm not too motivated, given that (a) *you* messed up and (b) instead of calmly analyzing the problem (or giving others enough information to do that for you) you blame others.

I might need to remind you (and probably others screaming the same way on problems) with the disclaimer pretty much open source software comes with:

Code: [Select]
This software is distributed on an "AS IS" basis, WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, either express or implied.

Many thanks to users blaming others for their mistakes. Really gives one motivation to help those (and even to develop free software!) without getting paid for it.

I came here to describe a sound problem with your alternative firmware and without any questions about detailed information I got a reply that it must be my crappy player (hardware error!) and not your firmware. Even the fact, that the original firmware doesn't produce the described sound quality problems didn't interest anyone of your developers.

Furthermore you are not in any kind interested whether the described error is the one you assume and you are not in any kind interested to get any diagnosis information to improve your software because you think it is superior to everything else, even to the original manufacturers firmware that produces flawless sound quality. Now I can tell you that it's not the described problem because the circumstances are not applicable in my case. Obviously your MP3 decoding software has some flaws but as I said, everyone can compare the original firmware of his player with Rockbox and make his own decisions about this.

Your uninstaller doesn't work properly, he puts the player in an unusable state. Here again you state that your software works properly and instead of improving it, you blame the manufacturer of the original software (Sandisk company) because the original firmware couldn't be reinstalled in this heap of ruins that Rockbox leaves behind!

What kind of arrogance!!! Well, it is really the question who of us should check his attitude.

Hopefully someone else from another forum in the Internet helped me removing the remains of your firmware and getting my player working again. I assume, someone who has more knowledge about those things than you have. Many thanks to this person!

Additionally he second my opinion that Rockbox has some design flaws in its audio algorithms and he suggested me to stay with the original firmware because of its better sound quality.

Here now we part ways. Good luck with your "product".

If you wanted help reinstalling the original firmware, you could at least tell us what DAP you are using. ;)

EDIT: Your previous post shows that you are using a Clip. However, you did not specify which version you have (Clipv1, Clipv2, Clip+, Clip Zip).

I can't remember if rbutil can uninstall the clip bootloader or not, but the process is so trivial to do yourself its not worth using a program anyway. Its all in the manual but basically you just boot into the Sandisk firmware and copy a firmware file over.

You said in the other thread you've already done it before. Just repeat what you did the first time.

I feel I should point out for the record that if anyone rendered any player unusable, it was OP, not Rockbox.org.

We didn't force you to do anything.
Every action you took to get to this stage was taken of your own volition.

Remember, this isn't our job.
None of us get paid for this. If we did, we might be a little more willing to cop abuse from people who can't take responsibility for their own actions or phrase a support request in a polite and civilized fashion.

If you would like, I could write you out a personal cheque refunding you any and all monies you paid for the use of Rockbox as recompense.
