Peak Meter Hold in custom VU - possible???

I love the peak meter hold (indicator) and release feature with the default VU meter, but I have not seen this possible in a custom theme with a custom VU meter. This is for an iPod Video, so I know there is a decent battery hit, but I'm OK with that. I have built a nice L/R peak meter, based off the Xplorr theme, but I can't get the peak indicator to show up. Is there a way this can be done? I have not seen any tags that would allow this, but have I missed something?
