Clip Zip dead / unsoldered battery (my guess)
« on: July 11, 2014, 07:00:56 PM »
Hello, after one and a half year of enjoying my RB'd clip zip, I found it malfunctioning one day.

It was off and not turning on, not even just to say low battery, so I pluged it in and it lit.

However, the battery icon which used to  show a loading bar now only blink from empty battery to full battery, and it won't charge.

When I unplug it turns off; It can stay charging a long time and the screen stays on although it should turn off after ten seconds, also time and date are reset every time I unplug;

If I try to play music while plugged in it will play for 15 to 20 seconds then turn off;

I tried other chargers, as well as plug it to the computer with no success;

I didn't change any setting or update recently, so I guess the battery just died? It was working well and still giving 8 hours juice the day before, so could it be just unsoldered?

Has anyone experienced this?  Is there somewhere a tutorial to open the clip zip properly? (I found one for the Clip+, is it applicable?

Finally I couldn't find a spare battery on ebay, does anyone know where to find some?

I though: well, time to change and maybe go for the new clip sport, but no rockbox means no thanks.

My guess is that something on the board burned out, and the battery is still connected and charged, but not able to provide power to the device.  You could try replacing the battery, but that may not fix it.

If you like the player, I'd just buy a new one.  They are extremely cheap.

Yep, most likely what I'll do, but I'll try something on this one first.

Of course now I regret to not have saved my config file off the built in memory... lesson learnt.

so... I opened it up and indeed, on wire was unsoldered; however I don't have the tools to solder such a small wire without damaging the whole boad;

My brother has the tools at his workplace and will make an attempt next week.
