[SOLVED] Sansa Clip Zip - Can't confirm name when creating playlist
« on: June 29, 2014, 05:18:15 AM »
I have a Sansa Clip Zip and something does not seem to be as it should be. When I try to create a playlist via the playlist catalogue I come to the screen where I get to name the playlist. The naming process works as expected but there is no way to confirm my playlist. No matter how I try to figure out a combination of buttons to "confirm" there just does not seem to be possible. Am I missing something obvious here or is there something wrong with Rockbox here?

Are you entirely certain this is correct?

I don't see any reason for the keymaps to differ in this regard between targets, and this is certainly not the way it works on any target I own.

I guess, since I have answered this question at least twice now, that I should update the manual in this regard.
Its apparent it is lacking, and the behaviour that the user needs to discover, is exceedingly non-obvious.

To save a file with the virtual keyboard, you need to be in "text edit mode" (as opposed to "character select mode"), meaning the cursor needs to be in the text field, and then the user must use the Play key to save. Holding select does nothing here, and pressing select acts as a delete function in text edit mode.

To summarize, make sure the cursor is in the text field, not the character selection field, and then use Play to save.

So, I go into text mode (as pointed out with the square in the attached image) and press the "play" button (as marked in the image with a circle). When I do this, all that happens is that the marker jumps up from the text mode into character mode. It seems like the play-button is not working as a confirm button but as a navigation button to move the "cursor". Are you meaning another button when you say the "play" button?

I have to apologize profusely here, I made a poor call expecting the keymaps to have any sort of consistency...

It turned out my memory failed me in this case, and I apologize for that.

It even turned out that I misremembered the key layout on the Clip(s) to start with. You were quite right, I did in fact mean another button, I recalled it being more consistent with the iPods, but Play and Menu are flipped, and as it turns out, it's neither of those keys anyway.

Anyway - I went digging, and, saratoga was absolutely right. I'm not surprised that he was correct (keymap tells me that it is indeed long select, whilst in the text edit field), but I am surprised at how inconsistently this is handled across targets.

I must apologize again, to both of you, my gut told me something and I ran with it without having the hardware near by to back it up. I should not have done so.

This has, however, gotten my rather motivated to try and breathe some consistency into the virtual keyboard keymap. I can't think of any good reason why it should be so different across targets. I shall also endeavour to actually document the virtual keyboard keymap in the manual, in its entirety.

Sorry for the delay, I've been on vacation.

My problem remains; I can't confirm and create a playlist.

If I use any of the directional buttons the cursor just moves around and if I use the center button or the "go back" button it just works as a backspace and deletes letters from my playlist name.

EDIT: if such a elementary feature like playlists are buggy then the Sansa Clip Zip should be moved from "Stable ports" to "Unstable ports" since it has "problems that limit it to advanced users".

Take a look at how we define stable:

As you can see, the Zip fits our definition.

It works on my Zip as well.

Once you're done entering text, arrow down until the entire file name is highlighted. Once it's highlighted, hold the Select key until you get the message that your file was saved successfully.

If you highlight the file name and just press the Select key, it will delete a character. If you hold it down, it will save the file.

I agree with [Saint], it's not very intuitive, and not consistent across ports.

Thanks a bunch! It seems that a message flashes by (assuming it says something about successfully saved) and then I return to the "create playlist" option.

However, when I go back to the "Playlist catalogue" there is no playlist with that name.

Where am I supposed to start my playlist or view it's content?

EDIT: It seems that the playlists appears in the root folder of the player. How come they're not saved in the Playlist catalogue?

It does that--I forgot to warn you. I'm not sure why it behaves that way, but it's an easy cut-and-paste that you can even do from within Rockbox.

It saves playlists in the root directory on every target I've tried, so I assume there's a reason for it. Maybe I shouldn't.

Wouldn't it be more logical if all the playlists were visible in the playlist catalogue?

I know how a file system work but I don't wanna think about that when I'm trying to relax to some music.

yes, having it display all the playlists has always been a goal, but technical issues have prevented it

For reference,

Saving to the Playlist Catalogue #1:
{WPS|File Browser} Context Menu -> Playlist Catalogue -> Add to {New} Playlist

Saving to the Playlist Catalogue #2:
WPS Context Menu -> Playlist -> Save Current Playlist

Saving a playlist to /root (or any arbitrary path):
Playlist context menu -> Create Playlist

Why doesn't the manual cover this? Good question.
Is this non-obvious? You betcha sweet 'lil taters it is.
Why are there two ways to do exactly the same thing? Who knows...not me.

Clarifications:
File Browser Context Menu - The context menu displayed when brought up on an arbitrary directory
WPS Context Menu - The context menu available from the WPS
Playlists Context Menu - The context menu displayed when brought up on the Playlists main menu item

EDIT: Now that I think I have a fairly good understanding of the behaviour, I might have a go at making the documentation and reality align correctly. Expectation vs. reality is an entirely different matter altogether, and beyond my means, but I can make sure that the documentation correctly describes behaviour.

I tried the methods described below on my Sansa Clip v2, to save a current playlist that consists of a bunch of files from different directories to later find it in the Catalogue. ( I hope this is what the OP tries to do as well)

Quote from: [Saint] on August 28, 2014, 03:32:43 AM
Saving to the Playlist Catalogue #1:
{WPS|File Browser} Context Menu -> Playlist Catalogue -> Add to {New} Playlist

From the WPS Browser, that only saves the current playing file to a playlist, not the entire current playlist.

Quote from: [Saint] on August 28, 2014, 03:32:43 AM
Saving to the Playlist Catalogue #2:
WPS Context Menu -> Playlist -> Save Current Playlist

That does not save the playlist to the Catalogue, but to the directory of the first file of the current playlist.

Am I understanding things wrong?

Greetings,

I was playing with this extensively last night, and I'm playing with this now, and the behaviour you describe conflicts heavily with the behaviour I'm seeing.

From the WPS Browser, that only saves the current playing file to a playlist, not the entire current playlist.

Perhaps you are just bringing up the context menu on a singular file? If that were the case, then that behaviour would be expected. If you were to bring up the context menu on a directory, and perform the flow described above, it will recursively add everything under that directory.

That does not save the playlist to the Catalogue, but to the directory of the first file of the current playlist.

I'm not sure what to say about this one.

I can't see any room for confusion and the behaviour you describe is most definitely not what I am seeing. This flow results in the dynamic playlist being saved to the playlist catalogue as "dynamic.m3u8", unless you were to rename it when given the opportunity to, of course.
