manual install of 3.12 on Fuze v2
« on: May 13, 2014, 07:46:39 PM »
I'm having a problem (discussed in the general forum) with RockBox on my Fuze v2.

in an effort to see if it's some issue in 3.13, I want to install 3.12, and apparently the only way to do that is to do the manual install.

Unfortunately, the instructions in the Fuze manual don't make any sense. in section 2.2.2 it says if Rockbox has previously been installed with the auto installer, you can skip right to section 2.2.5. So, looking at section 2.2.5, it tells you to eject the device and wait for the update to finish.

So, where's the instructions for whatever it is we have to do to manually install? we just skipped 'em all!

what steps SHOULD we do to do the manual install???

thanks!

You're misreading the instructions.  It says that if you are using (present tense) rockbox utility then you can skip to section 2.2.5.  You aren't using rockbox utility though, so you should not skip to that section.

@Saratoga:

it says (I copy and paste this here from the Fuse v2 manual):

If you have used Rockbox Utility to install Rockbox,
then you do not need to follow the next section and can skip straight to section 2.2.5
(page 17) [emphasis mine]

Now, I guess I shouldn't argue with you, surely you know better than I,... but it clearly doesn't say "if you are using", but phrases it in past tense.

I'd be happy to use RockBox Utility, but I don't see an obvious way to install an old, non-current, version using it. Am I overlooking something here, too?

The manual installation looks a bit complicated, so if I can avoid it, I'd be happy. Or perhaps all I need to do is drop certain files in certain places, and do not need to do a full manual install??

thanks!

My apologies to Saratoga, and everyone else, I didn't MEAN to give a sharp response.

I'm just trying to DOWNGRADE the rockbox on my Fuze v2 and can't figure out how. Guidance would be appreciated.

Q1: As far as I can figure, RockboxUtility won't install anything older than current/stable--is there any way to coerce it to do so?

Q2: assuming the answer to Q1 is "no", then I'm stuck doing a manual install.

In that case, since RB has already been installed, the bootloader is already in place, so is the only thing I need to do to downgrade, to unzip the firmware as described in the manual at 2.2.2 up to but NOT including the bootloader stuff?

If so, after doing the unzip (correctly) I'd just safely disconnect the USB device, unplug the USB cable, and reboot the player?

thanks!

Yes, you already have the bootloader, so you do not need to install it again.  Just installing the rockbox version you want will be enough.

Saratoga: thanks for the confirmation.

I've got 3.9.1 installed, now, on my Fuze v2 (3.9.1 is what I had on it for a long time prior to 3.13), and
I've updated the thread over in the general forum where you and I had discussed the playlist problem. you might want to take a look at that, if you haven't seen it yet.

I'll be posting additional follow-ups over there.

thanks again!
