Ipod classic 80gb - can't identify what's wrong, possibly disc?
« on: June 01, 2014, 10:38:20 AM »
Hello. Recently my ipod has fallen and since than Rockbox doesn't launch. I suspect it might be disc damaged but not sure. When I try to launch it, Rockbox fails to load, tries to use fallback image than I am shown white screen with black font saying ' *PANIC* AT: Error 80000000 while reading BBT (sector 0, count 1)'. Is it indeed disc being broken? What can I do to ensure that? All help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, pequetc

You could verify this trivially by restoring the device with iTunes.

The disc doesn't actually need to be functional at all in order to do this. This won't magically fix anything, by any means, but what it will allow is for you to boot into Apple's diagnostic menu and confirm (very, very likely, with the information given), or deny, your fears.

Other points of interest are things like:
- Does the disk make any peculiar noises?
- Does the disk make any noise *at all*, can you feel/hear the platter spinning on boot?

I think I cannot restore it with iTunes, the program doesnt recognise iPod (might be connected to fact that rockbox is not running, only boot menu). However, I checked the other two points mentioned, I can hear sound I would compare to needle scraching vinyl or so, sounds a bit odd anyway. That would mean that disc is indeed the problem, am I right? Thanks for the tips. Regards, pequetc

You can indeed restore, you would simply need to force the iPod into DFU mode, exactly the same as you did as a prerequisite to installing emCORE.
