List of prooved Rockbox compatible Android devices
« on: May 29, 2014, 01:04:06 PM »
=================
HEADER
=================

Rockbox works as an App for many Android devices BUT android users have to find (or build) a compatible theme version.
That should depend only on screen resolution. However since there are squillions of devices and so many android versions, I am starting a list of prooved compatible versions of <Android devices> vs <Rockbox screen resolution>
(reference link http://rasher.dk/rockbox/android/)

---------
If you reply to this post, please consider doing it as follows, aiming to keep a full up-to-date list & avoid having to browse through each & every post to gather information

In your latest update, feel free to improve my poor layout  ::)

=================

1- You want to UPDATE(s) the list ?
EDIT (ONLY) update with fully compatible device (prooved by your experience)
EDIT or with device which were not comatible as expected
The list will be sorted alphabetically by brand/name/model/
---------
1-1 Look for your device in the latest post with a list
> Copy the latest UP-TO-DATE post => copy ALL including HEADER, COMMENTS, LIST => paste ALL in your reply
> Browse through the list & check if your device is already listed
---------
1-2 Your device is already listed
> update your device with new useful details (if any..) by adding yours
(ex. add a line with your android version, etc..)
=> post
---------
1-3 Your device is not listed AND you picked your android app here http://rasher.dk/rockbox/android/
> create a new entry following template
=> post
---------
1-4  Your device is not listed AND you build a theme that works with your device and is not listed here  http://rasher.dk/rockbox/android/
> post your theme where & as appropriate on the main rockbox.org website
(sorry I cannot help)
> create a new entry following template including a link to your theme on the main rockbox.org website
=> post
---------

=================
2- You don't want to update the list
(or not only)
> anything that does not fit in the list should be posted separately
> Copy ONLY the HEADER of this post => paste ALL in your reply
> write your post below
=> post

I'm unsure of the purpose of this thread.

It is essentially just telling people what resolution their device is, for a tiny subset of devices.

That, and a minimum API version of 8 - Froyo - (IIRC), is quite literally the only criteria that matters.

One shouldn't treat the builds provided by rasher as official builds, as they are not.

It is also not right to suggest that Rockbox only supports certain resolutions on Android, as this is not the case. Rockbox supports any arbitrary resolution and orientation, rasher simply provides a few common resolutions for the sake of convenience (though you will note that these builds are NOT up-to-date).

I'm unsure of the purpose of this thread.
It is essentially just telling people what resolution their device is, for a tiny subset of devices.
The purpose is to extend the list of devices which are (have beeen) successfully used with rockbox FROM THE END USERS POINT OF VIEW.
With all due & immense respect to the devs I believe the purpose of rockbox is to let as many people as possible enjoy music on as many players as possible.

I sense the importance of acurate phrases like "criteria that matters", "official builds", "up-to-date builds" and so on but quite frankly, all I want is my device to port rockbox without bugs and for that to happen I need "official builds" or "release" if they are available but if not then anything will do as long as it works.

So for me Rasher does not just

simply provide a few common resolutions for the sake of convenience
(and warn us these are neither official nor up-to-date)

He's the only source of code/android app available to guys like me to let our smartphones rock.

Unfortunately.

So when I read :

I guess it means rockbox has the potential to be used on any smartphone AND I am sure it's technically right and true.

But in my world it's a little bit more complicated.
1-  Having a smartphone with a resolution that does not match an app to download means just NO WAY FOR ROCKBOX

2- Having a smartphone with a resolution that matches an app to download DOES NOT NECESSARILY mean ALRIGHT for rockbox
I just sent back a Motorola Moto E which had a screen resolution that was on rasher's list so it should have worked and indeed it did... but with the tiniest font on screen, so tiny I could'nt read anything.
Of course if I was a dev, I'd be laughing at that but for me it's just NO WAY FOR ROCKBOX on this phone, so I sent it back (for other reasons as well by the way = useless camera and nonsense dual sim management)

So now this list makes sense with a device that was supposed to port Rockbox (not officially...) but doesn't.

I mean it makes sense to any end user like me, I won't argue if a dev says it doesn't to him.

Wait...

Let me just see if I understand this correctly.

You returned perfectly good hardware, because you didn't understand how to properly configure the (in no way suited for public consumption) software you put on it?

And then, you make absurd claims about hardware compatibility (that I am sorely tempted to remove, and may still, because they serve no purpose other than to mislead), and sprinkle a few other mistruths about the place while you're at it.

...

Stop me if I'm wrong here.

It is apparent to me that perhaps I should've been a bit more forceful with my previous "knock it off" response to this behaviour.

Just so the folks can follow along at home, let me clarify:

- Rockbox is compatible with any Android hardware that has a screen and a minimum API level of 8.
- Rockbox does not need to be built to match your exact screen resolution[1]
  (you can load a binary built for a lesser resolution - but not one built for a greater resolution)

OP: if you need support, or have a question, ask. This was resolvable. Trivially.
If you come across something you need help with, or something that doesn't seem right to you, ask us.

inventing facts isn't the right way to deal with it.

I agree with [Saint.] here. Rockbox for android isnt really ready for users. If (by your own admission) its rashers build or nothing then rockbox isnt right for you just yet.
