What version of rbutil are you running? 

Regardless, if autodetect doesn't work you can simply select the drive letter for your player manually.

Post the output of the About / Troubleshooting / System Trace log after the error occured. That's the usual way of addressing problems, and if you search the forums this is what's being asked for in almost all cases. I'm not willing to watch a video to figure things I cannot see in it but are easy to spot when looking at that log.

My guess is that your player is in MTP mode.

so how do I change from MTP mode to whatever mode needed?

I experimented a little and I think I can reproduce his problem:

1)  New install of rbutil 1.4
2)  Connect Sansa in MTP mode
3)  Make sure no MSC devices are attached
4)  Hit autodetect

The utility crashes for me with an unhandled exception, at least on Windows 7 with:

Unhandled exception at 0x00b45a82 in RockboxUtility.exe: 0xC0000005: Access violation writing location 0x00000000.

If I have the player disconnected or in MSC mode, it works fine.  Perhaps the autodetect code detects the MTP device by mistake?  I tried debugging it, but without the symbols I can't really do much except look at x86 assembly

so is there any way for me to change MTP mode into another mode?

I'm going to upgrade to a clip+ , will that encounter the same problem?

Yes and yes.  Its under settings in the Sandisk firmware. See our installation directions in the manual if you can't find it.

can rockbox display Asian characters? Sansa firmware could, but I'm getting boxes in Rockbox.

Yes, it can.

Not every font will necessarily have the required glyphs, though.

The only font that I am immediately aware of that has full glyph coverage is 16-Unifont.fnt, which is included in the font pack linked on the left hand side of this very page in the Extras section, or installable via Rockbox Utility.

On the awfully small screen of your device however, a 16pt font is going to drastically limit the amount of lines displayed at any one point in time in the lists and menus, and may possibly cause the while playing screen to render incorrectly.

And it can also be theme dependant, some themes (not the default, cabbiev2), will hardcode the fonts used instead of allowing a user selectable font, so the decision is effectively taken out of your hands and the glyph coverage is entirely dependant on the foresight, or lack thereof, of the theme's author.

Digging around you can find other fonts that have a lot of glyphs, I think the ubuntu and notofu and dejavu fonts for example have a lot.  Just get a bunch of fonts and see what displays right for your content.
