Here's some metadata for the Bad Company cover from the other tread. Might be useful:

Yes, most of my MP3 purchases are from Amazon, a few from Google Play, but only two of the Amazon albums have exhibited this problem: the Mozart and the Tron movie soundtrack, which also incidentally has a small logo surrounded by black.

I will use Mp3tag to first copy the album art to a file, then clear the album art from the album and reapply it to all tracks, see how it goes.

Cool. Please post the extracted album art file here. Might be interesting..
I suspect this one has a different issue than the other greyish covers as this one still has colors while the others have different shades of grey only.

The bad image is saved as YCbCr4:4:4, whereas most normal JPEGs are subsampled at YCbCr4:2:0 or something similar.  My guess is the unusual color format causes the problem, and when the image is resaved its converted into a more normal color space which works around the problem.

That's not it. The color format doesn't change when I resave.

Yeah looking at the code I think you're right.  I'm not sure whats different about that file then.  Can you post a link to the 4:4:4 sampled version that does work?

Nope, didn't work.

Took Mp3tag, extracted the album art from those two albums that exhibit the grey-out problem, saved them as "folder.jpg" and then took all the tracks from both albums, cleared out all the art and then added the folder.jpgs to each album.

So that was a waste of time. Guess there's a problem with the JPEG decoder after all.

Just use this as folder.jpg or cover.jpg: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41yV53QAEyL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

But first share the broken jpg with us, please :)

saratoga, gotta resave again.. wait a minute..

Yeah like I said before it happens with the JPEG files Saint linked, and can be fixed by resaving the JPEG in an editor, so clearly its not related to album art specifically.

Do you have an email addy I can send it to as an attachment?

Also, how did you alter the above picture you linked to?

Lastly, there is still the Tron album that also has a dodgy picture.

That's a good point, I just extracted the album art out of the files and put it back in without even saving it in a graphics editor. I might try that now: is Irfanview a good choice? I've created lots of album art using that which has worked flawlessly so far.

I didn't alter it all all; it's amazon's version of that cover.

You can attach the broken .jpg to your reply here.

Problem fixed!

The solution I've found is to extract the original JPG, open it with Irfanview, save it directly without any alterations and then re-embed it into the original MP3s in place of the old JPG. Cleared things up a treat for both offending files.

ZincAlley, tried attaching the Mozart picture but it's too big for a single file here, so it'll have to be some other means.

Here they are, under Photobucket - I assume they won't have been altered:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v175/Foebane/tron.jpg

See if this helps.
