Font inconsistency - clip+ to clip zip
« on: May 13, 2014, 08:51:54 PM »
I've had a Clip+ for a while and been pleased with it, but after some (brief) excursions into the pond it has become rather flaky.  I bought a Clip Zip to replace it, and it seems to be good.

However, I have a text file I've read on the Clip+, and copied it to the zip in one of the good moments.  For some reason the "smart" quotes display improperly on the zip, even after copying the font I was using on the plus to the zip (I get various accented characters with space after instead of the quote).  Any solutions other than changing the quotes to ascii quotes?

Edit:  I figured out the font - at least mostly.  It was an encoding issue; the default on my player is 8859-1, and it needed to be utf-8.  Still got spaces after the closing quotes, which looks a little ugly for apostrophes, but it's at least usable.

Any chance anyone knows enough about font on the different devices to explain this?  I find myself at a loss to even posit an explanation, even though I can observe the effect.  I did install V3.13 on both, and copied the file from one device to the other, and then the font after failing to find a font that rendered the file correctly, only to find the font that worked before no longer did.

The clip+ that seems bricked apparently works fine except (and a bit of a big except) for turning on until the battery has run down.  To be clear, all buttons work, and it seems to play just as well as I remember.  I can even turn it off with the power button but I cannot then turn it on until the battery has run down.  Anyone have ideas for a solution?

Edit: I should note that the inability to turn it on extends to not coming on even by inserting a power adapter, not just the power button.

Thanks,

Tor
