Atari 2600 Emulator
« on: May 08, 2014, 01:34:52 PM »
Hi to everyone :) I've gotta iPod Classic 5th Gen and I'm using Rockbox for a long time. I really like the integrated Rockbox games, they are very funny and lookin' kinda oldschool, you know. I noticed that gameplay is very similiar to Atari 2600 experience. Or maybe they were ported from Atari, i don't know. So, I thought that it will be great idea to make Atari 2600 plugin in the next Rockbox release. I know that we've already have Rockboy, but it works kinda buggy, and in my opinion controls definitely is not suitable for iPod's. As you know, Atari has only one action button and 4 directional joystick, just like on iPod. I didn't use any others Rockbox walkmans, but i suppose that it will be convenient for them too. So, I'd like to ask the developers, is it possible to make such plugin. Please, left your opinion. :)

Yes it should be possible, the 2600 was a very slow system relative to even the gameboy.  I don't see much interest in people working on this though.

Yes, this is possible, and most target devices should be more than capable of this task.

However, as saratoga alluded to, if this is a feature that you would like to see included in Rockbox then the prime candidate for completing this task is yourself.

Most, if not all, of the current developer base is concerned mainly with audio playback, user interface, and system stability (not in that, or any, particular order).

The games are a fun novelty, but its no secret that these days most people are going to be carrying a smartphone with them that is better suited for tasks like this in every way, shape and form imaginable.

No one would be opposed to the inclusion of such a plugin in Rockbox if one were to be presented via the gerrit instance, but I don't think there is much/any motivation to add such a plugin from the current developer base. If there were, I would posit it would have eventuated several years prior.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

There is already.

It's not even near completion, and nobody's working on it, though.

As [Saint] said, if you want to see this happen, you're the best one to make it happen! ;)
