Battery completely dies after less than a day
« on: April 29, 2014, 01:56:08 PM »
Hello all,

I'm a newbie to the forums, but not to Rockbox. Wondering if anyone has a tip for me.

I own an iRiver H340. Have had it for probably 5 years. I was on an ancient version of Rockbox (probably from 3 to 4 years ago) and whenever the I powered off the device, the battery would still last for weeks at a time.

After upgrading to .12, the battery started dying as if I has it turned on always. Every time I let it sit for a day, it is totally dead and I have to plug the charger in for at least a minute before it will even power on. I bought a new high capacity battery thinking my battery was just funky (it wasn't the original, but a high capacity one also).

Just recently updated to .13 hoping it was just a software bug, but no dice, so new batter and newer version didn't help.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks for checking out my post!

What device?

Anyway, generally speaking, if the player is off then rockbox is not running and we can't do much if you aren't running our software.  Is your device off?

I edited my response when I realized I forgot to include the device. Sorry about that.

It's the iRiver H340. I just wondered if there was a difference in the way it goes to sleep vs. shutting down in newer versions than previously. I might try to track down the version I was on previously to see if it acts the same way, but wanted to find out if there a setting I could look at that might be causing it to act this way. Even the original battery that came with the device lasted longer than what this is doing.

Thanks for checking it out! Have a wonderful week.

There is actually no way to go to "sleep" in rockbox.  The device is either on or off.

Thanks for the info. I'll try another new battery.

Also, verify that the device is actually off when the battery is run down, and not crashed or still running with the power off timer accidentally disabled.

Hello there, I am new to this forum, and will try to introduce myself later...

Now shortly, I have two H340 Iriver players which showing similar behavior as yours. They can not be totally turned off from the battery point of view :) , because both of them are sinking about 20mA in off state. So battery becomes totally empty after 3-4 days.

As I am involved with embedded hw and sw design, I can help but this time,  I am not sure if it is a bug (as it seems me) or it is a player's feature? I was googling for some info on this problem and even found that some people were thinking that it was normal behavior (that H3x0 made battery empty after few days of no use).

Back to story, my players look like to be completely turned off: there is no single voltage inside them (3.3 or 1.8) in off state, but still there is ~20mA current flow. Something is broken probably but it is hard to isolate which one component is bad  i.e. to isolate charging circuit from pcf... but it can be done with some pcb tracks cut or desoldering ICs.

My players are from different HW versions (there is some obvious difference in battery charging circuits) but still they are showing identical behavior.

As I said I am willing to help, have some instruments for hw debug, and also have evident interest  :)
I can track problems in HW, but first I need any info from more experienced H3x0 owners. Is there any people who can remember if there was some story about those 'issues' on misticriver forums?

The very first thing to check is if Original firmware do the same. Boot OF, turn off the player and measure power consumption in this state.

Hi,
I am going to check it again, cause I have already done that some time ago. If I remembered well,  player sinks current in off state no matter what fw was running before. So everything is pointing to some hw malfunction (lx2201,  one OR gate xx32,  or philips power management ic: pcf, or who knows...)

I am just wandering how many players have this issue: I have two, second handed, different HW version, and both have same malfunction.
It seems to me like some system fault :(

Hi just short update in the case that somebody has similar problem.

I have confirmed that player sinked current in off state no matter what fw was running before. Also I have noticed something interesting with one player i had in front of me: It falls in "charhing" state even without DC adaptor or USB cable plugged in (first checked from rockbox: system/debug/view battery) So I started with charger circut debug and found that LX2201 was fault.  USBIN pin is somehow internally joined with VDD pins, and who knows what else is bad inside. It has to be replaced.
This players sinks about 10mA in off state.

Hello again,
just for the reference, I have removed lx2201 from the pcb and now it is confirmed that IC was bad. Now player sinks less than 1mA when it is powered off, which is probably ok and in accordance with schematics (M2 hw rev) Also, one of the KIC7S32 was bad.
