Sansa Clip ZIP: Connect USB without charging ?

is it possible to connect the Sansa Clip ZIP via USB (MSC) without
starting the charging process?

It is on some devices. See if there's setting for it.  If not you'd have to disable charging in the source.

I had "feared" that the discision whether to charge or not is based
on hardware only.
But if I only have to hack the source...I will see!

No, charging a lithium ion battery is a complex process that generally requires CPU involvement to do safely.
