Database is always empty [ipod4g gray]

(1/1)

Meph:
Hi everyone and thanks for your work!

I bought a ipod 4g grayscale, just to use Rockbox on it - simply because i hate itunes and love the concept of Rockbox.
I had to change the battery and the HDD, I am using a 32GB CF now.

After the first install I put some music on it and unmounted the ipod (but maybe it was still connected as a remote, since I could still change the volume on my PC via ipod).
Then a reboot and initializing the database and listening some music - everything worked fine, until the next reboot, when it crashed and panicked (dir entry 14 in sector 0 is not free ...).
Found out that it might have happened, because the ipod might not have been completely unmounted - so i restored it in itunes and reinstalled Rockbox, shut down my computer (just to be sure), configured Rockbox and saved it as a file, put music on it (again a complete shutdown to be sure), and initialized the database.
Music is stored in ./music/

The database was empty (except for the status bar, the screen was white), even after 'initialize now' and/or 'update now' in the settings.
I also tried to delete the database files in the .rockbox folder, but not the database.ignore file of course, but after the next shutdown and restart the files were back again.
Also tried shutting down and messing around with the database settings.

I can play the music via file manager and create playlists, but that would be annoying, when using the 32GB.

Does anyone have another idea how to fix the database?
I'll try to restore it again and see if it changed anything, when I'm home again.

Thanks for reading!

Hi,

I experienced a similar case. I use a 4g ipod too where I have the lastest rockbox installed (3.13)
I like to play music and also create playlists (I am a free-time DJ and compose playlists, when I run into a nice song I add it to a playlist by long-presssing the middle-white button)
I ran into panic's at some point (could not determine what caused it to start) sometimes when playing a song or sometimes when adding it to the playlist.
After that panic through rockbox file manager I could not see any of my music files (mp3 files) and I noticed also the icon's are presented in a different matter.
To solve this I had to connect the ipod to a PC and (via windows file manager) repair the volume (takes long time :-( )
After that the files are showed again and I can play them. But shortly after I get the panic again:

*PANIC*
Dir entry 15 in sector 0 is not free!
54 41 47 4E
pc:0005E6D8 sp:4000B578
bt end

I have a new battery. I have exchanged harddisk by another (at first I expected the harddisk to be bad) but this did not solve the problem. I uninstalled rockbox and now I use it for quite some time with the original ipod firmware and now it behaves fawlessly, no problems at all!!

So I suspect a bug in rockbox...

How to proceed.. can I make debug logs to catch it? how? where to post them?

ipod firmware sucks! I need rockbox (but no crashes)
HELP! :-)

We have fixed so much since 3.13 that its not worth reporting problems with it  I would update, and then check the file system for errors in case those crashes corrupted anything.

Exactly this.

The 3.13 release celebrated its 1st birthday on 2014-03-05 (March 5th), since that time there has been a lot of fixes, improvements, and additions to the Rockbox code base.

Like saratoga, I would highly recommend updating your Rockbox installation in order to receive these fixes, improvements, and additions to see if your situation improves.

Hi everyone,

I too appreciate all the work you have put into making Rockbox a fantastic alternative firmware for our iPods.  I regret to inform you that I also have the same problem...at first I thought it was something I was doing in the settings (letting the Database load into RAM, forcing it to update, etc.), or that it might have been a problem reading a tag (I changed WPS theme from the default, which always stuttered a bit to read the album art, to a text-only WPS).

It works...for a few times.  Then, inevitably, the database screen will go blank, except for the status bar.  I've tried it on both v3.13 and dev version 5fb3702-140820.

I should also note I've tried this after reformatting, clean restores in iTunes, checking the disk, etc.

I hope this thread isn't too old to go unseen!  I love Rockbox and would love to see this work!
