Ipod Classic (7th Gen) 1TB mSata SSD and Rockbox??
« on: April 08, 2014, 02:53:54 AM »
Hello guys.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00HWHVNUU/ref=dra_a_rv_ff_fx_it_P2000_1000?tag=dradisplay-20

This 1TB MSata SSD is two hundred dollars more expansive than 256GB SDD.
I wish I can replace my current Ipod Classic hard drive with this 1TB SSD.
Will this even work? is there anyone who have tried this? I've seen many people who put 480GB mSata SSD into their Ipod Classic and made it work. This 1TB one has same specification but just with larger capacity.

I also want to know about its battery usage level. I heard mSata SSD is far more energy efficient than usual hard drives. But, I'm not sure if this 1TB SSD or 256GB SSD will use less energy than my current 160GB HDD.
Someone informed me that 480GB mSata will give 12 hours playing time on Ipod Classic. Any ideas about this 1TB SSD?

Thanks in advance

I have the same situation as yours. I don't know much about iPod CLASSIC (I mean 6, 6.5, 7G) but I know for sure that Samsung 840 EVO MZ-MTE1T0BW won't work with iPod 5.5G because of PATA-to-mSATA adapter, which works at 3.3V, and Samsung 840 EVO mSATA 1TB uses 5V (proof: http://www.samsung.com/us/computer/memory-storage/MZ-MTE1T0BW (see Full Specs there).

But I found out that Samsung PM851 512GB MZMTE512HMHP will be working fine: http://www.centralcomputers.com/ccp91131-samsung-pm851-mzmte512hmhp-00000-512gb-msata-mini-mzmte512hmhp-0000-drisam512gbs.htm But it's so pricey, even at eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-PM851-512GB-mSata-Internal-Solid-state-drive-SSD-/301094165400?pt=US_Solid_State_Drives&hash=item461a9c5b98

But good news everyone!..  8)
If it is not a scam, there's may be a great apportunity for us, iPod owners in the nearly future:

Prototype:
http://www.tarkan.info/20140508/tutorials/modding/first-look-iflash-sata

It goes bad - with a customizable PCB, external battery and so one.. But maybe it'll be working one day, I hope so. (:

Any suggestions?..

I think that this must be a misprint on the Samsung site. The spec sheet for the other 840 EVO mSata drives all state 5 volts but that cannot be right. I've loaded a 128GB Samsung 840 EVO  SSD into my iRiver and it operates correctly. I think that the folk over at Samsung have dropped the specs for the 2.5" SSD into the webpage and not realised the error..

So it may be OK if the peak current draw is not excessive. Who's first?

i'm pretty sure the currents won't be an issue there, especially on solid state tech, but knowing samsung, i'd get confirmation if it can operate on 3.3v

so, you upgraded your H320 with a 256Gb SSD? sounds neat. now, do you think the ZIF-based Irivers would be upgradeable the same way with any large cap ZIF SSD?

But what about a custom tarkan mod?..

And I confidently insist that 128 GB mSATA SSD is OK only because it's using 3.3V instead of 1TB mSATA SSD, that uses 5.0V. So I think it's not applicable for any iPod for now.
Anyway it'll be great to listen to any success stories about installing 1TB in iPod.

These mSata SSDs run on 3.3v not 5.0v.
That information is a misprint. All mSata drives accept the same voltage and that is 3.3v. Check the photo attached.

Re the iRiver, not all mSata drives will work in the iRiver H300 series. The limitation appears to be peak current use. I had a lot of difficulty, for instance, with a Mushkin 250GB mSata unit. The only way to confirm compatibility is to take a punt, buy one, and check it out - or wait for someone else to do that. Who's first?

Not really. I've tried those 500GB mSata SSD with an adapter. Ipod will recognize the SSD and run rockbox firmware but it will be very unstable. Also, the SSD heats up a lot and consumes lots of battery within a short period of time. The main problem is the heat. It becomes usually hot quickly.

If you think you can squeeze  a 2.5" form factor in then go for it. ;)
