iPod Video 5th Gen 30 GB - skipping tracks
« on: April 07, 2014, 10:11:10 AM »
Hi,

I've been using my iPod Video 5th Gen 30 GB for approx. 1 year. I Rockboxed it from the very beginning. I never had any problems until now.

But, starting from the beginning. My library comprises of ogg (converted from FLAC) and mp3 files. I've erased all the tags from all my files, except for the name of the album, artist, track as well as track number and disk number; I've erased album covers as well. Up to date everything worked fine, including my Eminem and 2Pac albums. However, recently I changed my mind and I added album covers.

First problem (with Eminem album) - previously it worked without any problems, but recently I've played it and none of the song was played; every song was skipped. I guess that I found the solution - it seems to me that the size of the album cover was causing the problem i.e. it's size was 1400x1400, I've changed into 300x300 and songs are playing without any problems.

Second problem (with 2Pac albums) - previously it worked without any problems, but today on two particular albums one song on each album was skipped after playing it for about 1 or 2 minutes; the rest of the songs were played witout any problems.

To add, yesterday I had some problems with iPod so I restored it via iTunes (before that I've formatted the iPod disk via Wndows) and then I've installed Rockbox (standar 3.13 version), so I have the up to date version.

Please help. Do you think that the album covers can created those problems?

File system corruption maybe.

I'd probably install the current build as well. 3.13 is the current release but its really old.

File system corruption - is it related to the Rockbox itself or files? I had no problems with those files under the Rockbox which I've installed in April 2013.

How do I install current build? I have to choose development version in the RockboxUtility?

File system corruption happens from time to time on removable devices.  Check the disk for errors in windows.

You can update your build in rbutil or manually from the download link on this webpage.

I have installed the development version. All my music files are played correctly by my other player when played either from micro sd card or from the internal memory. But some of those files when uploaded to my Rockboxed iPod have the same problem i.e. either they are skipped or their playback is stopped and I'm hearing buzz.
What's more funny I have created a folder with 120 songs, including with 2Pac Ghetto Gosepl and this song was played correctly all the time. But when I crated a second folder with more songs, including 2Pac Ghetto Gospel, the same file is skipped after the playback of around 1m minute.

Can anyone suggest something? It seems that the files are correct (since they are played well on my other DAPs). Can it be something with the files transfer to iPod? If yes then what is it? Can it be Rockbox bug?

So, I finally done scan of my Ipod's disc via hdtune pro and it occured that the disc has around 10 bad sectors. I guess those bad sectors are causing skipping of those few tracks.
Is there any software which can fix the bad sectors?

This describes the process for Windows 7, but the process if pretty much identical across all modern Windows variants.

(I assume as Windows based host due to the software mentioned prior)

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.
