Ipod 5.5gen Installation Problem ("iPod could not be opened", Windows)
« on: March 30, 2014, 09:23:34 AM »
Hi everyone,

I just got a refurbished iPod video 5.5gen that I planned on rock boxing from the start. I ran the utility tool, used auto detect (though it gave me some error saying it couldn't find the mount point but it still found the correct iPod and the mount point was fine) and then tried to install, which is when the problem started.

Right when the installer progress menu came up, it said "Could not open iPod" with a red error sign next to it. I tried restarting it and manually entering disk mode on the iPod and the same thing happened. I tried installing iTunes to see if there were any settings I needed to change there, but it said the iPod was windows formatted and "enable disk use" was checked.

I feel like the problem stems from the constant "do not disconnect" screen that flashes on the iPod as if it is in use every time I connect it to the PC, but the only way I can get that screen to go away is if I eject it in which case the installer then throws an incorrect mount point error.

Any suggestions as to what to do? I'm at a loss!

Thank you

was the message  “Could not open Ipod: permission denied”? If so you may not be running the installer with administrative permissions.

Thanks for the reply, here is a screenshot of the error message itself:

After you get that message, could you go to the Help menu, Troubleshooting > System Trace and then copy the log to pastebin.com?

Sure, here it is: http://pastebin.com/mbRGCgaX

I have never used pastebin before so just let me know if you have problems seeing it!

Thanks again

Just to update:

I tried a manual install, extracted the firmware to my folder, and then tried the ipod patcher and when it came up it said:

[INFO] Scanning disk devices...
[ERR]: No ipods found, aborting
[ERR] Please connect your ipod and ensure it is in disk mode
[ERR]: Please refer to the Rockbox manual if you continue to have problems

I'm really at a loss now, the ipod was in disk mode (though the "do not disconnect" screen kept flashing regardless) so I have no idea what to try now.

Does the Apple firmware work normally on the ipod?  I suppose you could try restoring it with itunes.

To be honest I'm not sure, I bought it solely for the purpose of rockboxing it so I haven't put any music on it at all yet. I will try restoring via Itunes, anything else I could try if that doesn't work? Should the Ipod say "do not disconnect" the entire time its connected to the PC?

Yes that message is normal IIRC.  But the Apple firmware must be fully functional or you will not be able to install.

Okay thanks, so I restored the Ipod and the problem is still there, could it be that some program is trying to access the ipod which is not allowing the installer in?

Or does it have something to do with it being unable to detect a mountpoint? (even though the right one is set after that message appears?)

I actually just tried it on a different computer and this time there was no error in the autodetect and the install started without the error but then the installer froze and things went down hill from there....a step in the right direction though I suppose.

Ok, so finally, in the most backwards roundabout way, I think I got it working.

What I did:

1. Restore Ipod on Computer A
2. Manually unzip the files into the Ipod with Computer A
3. Installed Bootloader with Computer B

For some reasons Computer A could transfer the zip whiles where computer B could not, but Computer B could run the manual bootloader where computer A could not. And both could not run the auto-installer because of errors at two separate stages. Very weird.....I'm just hoping all goes well now.
