Ipod Nano 2nd Gen 2GB bricked
« on: March 12, 2014, 04:00:36 AM »
Hello and good morning,

I made a stupid mistake and bricked my Ipod Nano 2nd Gen 2GB. I wanted to install rockbox and when it said I have to format the ipod to FAT32 I somehow thought I can do that after the installation. Since this mistake happend my Ipod always say it needs to be restored. Itunes recognizes the defective Ipod but fails to restore it properly.
Since I've read many times in this forum "it's nearly impossible to really brick an ipod" I wanted to try to recover it manually. I wanted to follow these instructions: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodManualRestore
Unfortunately I can't find the partition table file matching my Ipod (2nd Gen) on this site: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodConversionToFAT32
At least I successfully downloaded the firmware from http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/
Now I need the partition table file :-) Can anyone help me?

Best regards,
Leo

I had posted another response prior, but having had my memory refreshed somewhat after seeking a second opinion, everything here is pointing to your host system and/or iTunes being at fault. In this state, no Rockbox code is running at all. iTunes most certainly can recovery your device from this state, it failing to do so indicates the problem lies on the host system. You may want to try some of the simpler things first, such as:

- using a different USB cable
- using a different USB port (fron panel USB ports are almost always giant pieces of crap)
- uninstalling/reinstalling iTunes and its device drivers
- downgrading iTunes (we have had success with 9.2.1 in the past for the iPod Classic (6/7G) when iTunes has failed to restore)

Out of interest, what made you believe you needed to format the device? Am I to assume you had a Mac formatted iPod (in which case formatting the storage volume alone would /probably/ be sufficient for Rockbox but the Apple firmware would freak out about it).

EDIT: added link to assist downgrading iTunes

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Unfortunately I only have a laptop at hand and I tried all of its usb ports. At the weekend I'll try to borrow another usb cable from a friend.
In the meantime I try to downgrade my iTunes.

Yes, this Ipod was apple formatted. The ipod doesn't even get recognized on a Mac in its current state.

I had success with an original Apple iPod cable. The iPod is working like nothing happend before.
See my experience compressed in a blog post (german, but google translate will help you): http://www.markusleonhardt.de/blog/?p=265

Thanks for your help

Leo - who can't understand why Apple is doing this...
