Sansa Clip Zip - Can't get Rockbox to find player...
« on: March 06, 2014, 12:40:45 AM »
Hello...
I just purchased a Sansa Clip Zip...  I'm running Windows XP.
I've plugged the player in and the computer is recognizing it as a "portable media player", however it is not assigning the player a drive letter.  When I run the Rockbox Utility I see the following:
1.  The "Select your device in the file system" dropdown menu is empty.
2.  Running "autodetect" causes the Rockbox Utility to crash and an error message comes up asking if I want to report the issue to Microsoft.
3.  When I try to select the audio player manually and choose "Sansa Clip Zip (stable)" I get an error message that says: "The following errors occured: - No mount point given.  You need to fix the above error before you can continue."

I'm not sure how to proceed and I greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can provide.

Thanks so much for your time.

I did a little more research and came across the solution: I switched usb mode from MTP to MSC in the player settings and that resolved the issue.  All is well.  Thanks anyway... :)

Hello, I have the same issue with my Sansa Clip Zip. However, I don't know how to change the USB mode. Where can I find the" player settings" to do that?

Please let me know the full path to change this setting, because I already tried everything I could!

Thanks!  ;)

The "player settings" is the settings menu on the player.  Under that you can change the USB mode.

Thank you very much! I had already looked there, and now (knowing it is really there) I was able to dig deeper and just found it! It is kind of hidden under many menu options, not so easy to find...

PS: Do you think that with RockBox I will be able to read a SanDisk card 64GB on my Sansa Clip Zip player? If not, what should I do? Thanks again!

Yes.

Rockbox couldn't care less about any arbitrary firmware imposed limitations the original firmware may or may not have. Just make sure to format it as FAT32 (your OS may or may not allow this natively, Windows - I'm lookin' at you..., but there are many third party tools available to facilitate this task).

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Changing the USB setting has not worked for me. I am still getting the error that the mount point is invalid, but there is no option to change it, and autodetect simply crashes.

IIRC, autodetect crashing in the current release means that you have the USB setting wrong.  Can you verify that your player has been assigned a drive letter?  If it has, you should be able to select it from the drop down menu.

Yes, it is now F.  I am ready to install.  Another question is that my Zip Clip has been glitching for a couple of months - it will freeze if I try to go backward to the previous clip, and all I can hear are blips of noise, and it will not respond at all.  I have to shut it completely down by holding the power button for 20 seconds, and then it will come back and be fine until the next glitch.  So I am limited to going forward on an album.  Do you think the Rockbox firmware will eliminate this problem?  I have considered sending the player back to Sansa because it's certainly defective, but then I'd have to start all over again with a new player, load my music etc.

Also, should I pick my themes to download as I'm installing, or can I go back later and add them?

And, one more quick question - I have only 768 MB out of the 3.65 G on the player.  A problem?

No idea about that glitch, never heard of it.  You have enough free disk space, and you can install themes if you want to.

I've seen other users describe the same glitch on the Zip forums. It's something that *ought* to be fixed with FW updates, but Sandisk's updates leave a lot to be desired.  They never tell you what updates they are installing when you connect to the computer, if any, or if there are any fixes for these bugs/glitches.  It's a totally blind process.  I've connected several times but there hasn't been a fix yet.

I guess the worst that can happen is that it continues even with Rockbox and then I can send the player back or just throw it away.
