Sansa Clip Zip and 32GB microSDHC, Not detecting ALL files on microsd
« on: March 02, 2014, 06:43:53 PM »
I have Rockbox 3.13 installed on my device Sansa Clip Zip.
Also, i have an external 32GB micro SDHC card of which is formatted to the filesystem type FAT32.
There is about 20GB of space occupied, mostly music files on the SDHC CARD.
On my GNU/Linux machine i can mount this card when i plug in my Sansa Clip Zip via USB, and access All the files on it.
However, from within Rockbox itself (running on the device) i seem only to be able to access a tiny fragment of all the files on the micro SDHC card.

Now this is interesting as Rockbox seems only to let me access a portion of all the files though the directory tree, but when i build the database it clearly recognizes that there's more than 20000 songs totally on the device.
This is displayed through the message box that pops up when you build the database.

Summary:
1.Not able to access all files on the micro SDHC card through the directory tree nor the 'built' database.
2.The build-database message box says it has found over 20000 songs, but only a tiny portion of them are accessible through the database. (the same applies for the directory tree, only a portion of the files are accessible/displayed).
3.Can access all files perfectly fine on my GNU/Linux machine.

I would look at whats special about the files you can access vs. the ones you cannot.  Maybe that will give you some clue whats going on.

FWIW, there is no rockbox 4.0.

The version is corrected (i have the latest firmware 3.13).
Thanks for the advice. I will experiment by removing, re-adding a different set of files to see whether or not is is in fact the files that there is something wrong with (which i doubt), or maybe i will discover that there's a fixed size of files i can access.
Assuming Rockbox will only allow me to access a fixed size of files, what could be the cause of this?
Maybe some settings that can be changed via menu (to allow more files) or maybe a flag inside the firmware?

There is a limit of 400 files in any directory (configurable up to 10,000) in the file browser.  This won't effect the database though, just the ability to view large directories in the browser itself.  Otherwise there are no limits.

I can confirm that the problem is not with the files. As i can now access some of the files that i could not before, after i removed the old and re-added new ones (that were previously inaccessible).
I will try to add more files. I predict the outcome to be that i can access some of the files, but not all. And that the ones that i can access will be in random order of what they were added in (just as last time). Maybe this is a file system problem? Do you know anything about that?
Or maybe as ridiculous as this sounds, i cannot add too many files at once?

I have now discovered that after reaching 2gb of space occupancy on the micro SDHC card, the files that are added from there on will not be accessible through Rockbox.
What does this sound like to you? Any hunch on why Rockbox won't read anymore than 2gb of files on a 32gb micro SDHC card? They don't show in the database and neither in the directory tree.

Maybe there's some sort of properties of the file system that i need to add/change? Though the micro SDHC card is formatted to FAT32.
I would be eternally grateful if someone would contribute a possible solution to this problem.

Counterfeit card?  Do these files actually play on a PC?

The files plays on a PC.
I don't think it's a counterfeit because i can mount it and access all files and store up to 32gb on it (on my gnu/linux machine).

And the problem isn't that the files don't play. It's that they don't show up.

Like saratoga suggested this looks like all the symptoms of a faulty/counterfeit card.  You say you can "access all files" but actually on a 32GB card it would take an enormous amount of time to check that each audio file was playable.  Being able to see the file name in a directory tree is no indication that the file on the SD card contains the same data as the same file on your PC, or that it contains any data at all.

Anyway you mention you run a GNU/Linux system so this is really easy to check.  This involves losing all the data on your SD card but as it likely only contains 2GB of data, some of which is corrupt, and you have the originals elsewhere this will be no great loss.  Use a card reader to attach the card to your PC, no need to mount it.  Run GParted (the partition tool).   Write a new msdos partition table to the SD card and then create a FAT32 file system and let GParted take care of everything.  Then shutdown GParted, physically remove the card and reattach it and mount it.  I feel reasonably confident that you will find it is a 2GB card after all.  If so then welcome to the club.  This club's membership consists of about a gazillion people who thought they were saving $5 but who ended up with a defective piece of crap.

It used to be hard to find high capacity microSD at reasonable prices but these days the cards are really cheap and there is no reason not to buy branded goods (Sandisk, Toshiba, Lexar etc) direct from amazon or your local bricks & mortar store.  The people offering too good to be true super cheap deals are all scammers.
