New installation on Sansa Clip+ - unit is locked up

I tried to install onto my Clip+ using the automated install.  Something clearly went very wrong, because now the unit is completely locked, will not respond to and inputs, PC doesn't recognise a USB device (just get an 'unknown device' message from Win 7), and the screen on the Clip shows a graphic of a USB plug.  That's about the sum of it.

I hope there is a way to recover the device.  I'd be perfectly to simply uninstall whatever has been installed and return to the rather basic Sansa firmware - at least it works!  But first of all I need to get the device to wake up.

Suggestions, please!

Hold the power button until the unit resets.
