ipod classic 120 g mounting issue

So i installed rockbox on my 120 gig ipod classic a couple of weeks ago, it was working fine, i put some songs on it, life was great.  recently however, when i hook up my ipod to my computer, it's showing up as a generic removable disk drive.  i have heard this is a problem with windows 8 users, and i tried using the faq on the front page to fix it.  it suggests right-clicking on the drive and formatting the device that way, but when i try to do that (or just click on it normally), i get a never ending loading wheel and can't access it at all.  any advice?
