"Playlists" v "Playlists Catalogue"
« on: February 01, 2014, 10:47:54 AM »
Anyone know why the playlists menu is labelled Playlist Catalog, rather than Playlists?

Perhaps the reason is now only historical?

This menu on every other player I've seen is labelled "Playlists".

I see it did used to be labelled Playlists but was renamed to Playlist Catalogue here http://git.rockbox.org/?p=rockbox.git;a=commit;h=97a4c1ef , but the reason given makes no sense to me.

Thanks.

As you can see from the code the entry in the menu did something different before that change. So it wasn't simply renamed.

Yes I see that it wasn't simply renamed. But still I can't see why it was renamed.

The menu used to be named Playlists like the typical OF, but operated in a different way.

The menu operation was changed to be the same as typical OFs. So at that point the menu had the same operation and the same name as typical OFs. Fine.

But then the name was changed from the typical name to Playlist Catalogue.

And this new name it is inconsistent with other menus. The files menu is named Files, not File Catalog. The plugins menu is named Plugs not Plugin Catalogue.

So, I'm interested to hear what (if any) is the good reason for having this menu labelled Playlist Catalogue, rather than Playlist as originally on RB and currently on other players.

OK, so this was changed 3.5 years ago so I'm not going to pretend to remember the exact reason it was renamed (not that I think this discussion has any merit... but whatever), but if I *had* to come up with an answer I'll say because if it was left as is people would wonder why there are so few playlists in there and it isnt very browseable, or why it isnt just the filebrowser with the "playlists" view option set...

There has always been a wishlist task (maybe only in my head) to actually index the playlists on disk and have them displayed in this menu (or the database) but this requires a unfinished patch (gerrit down so cant link it) which would vastly improve the DB and dircache as a bonus.

It's because it isn't all of the playlists on the device, only those that have been added to the Playlist Catalogue. Files is all files on the device, etc.

Because the changed functionality made the other term not fit anymore.

So you're saying it would be better if we had an entry "Playlists" that people would expect to behave like the "Playlists" entry on other players / software but behaves differently? Seriously?

Wrong. It didn't behave as "typical OFs".

This is completely nonsense. Rockbox uses the term "Playlist Catalogue" for a specific functionality. The same way it uses the term "Files" for a specific functionality. This doesn't make things inconsistent.

Because "Playlist Catalogue" behaves differently. AlexP already said that.

Seriously, are you trying to piss of people? You're asking stupid and annoying questions in the worst way possible. That way you waste people's time, time that could be spent better for doing things like fixing bugs or addressing real issues. Or maybe even drinking beer :)

I've actually come to the conclusion that it's the world's most intricate trolling operation and we've all been taken in.
