most recent/best DAP for Rockbox
« on: January 29, 2014, 05:27:12 PM »
Hi guys, my old trusty YH 820 is almost ten years old, the battery is nearly gone, the 5 Gb size limit is hard to bear in 2014, so I'm looking for a possible sostitute in a near future.
What's the most recent, so implying also, if I'm not wrong, the best, DAP for Rockbox actually?
Any suggestion-opinion?
Thanks.

Most recent, and "best", do not necessarily go hand-in-hand (in fact, some people here would go so far as to claim that a decent DAP hasn't been manufactured in years...).

Also, "best" is incredibly subjective. My "best" may (and probably does) differ greatly from yours.

With the information you have given (which is almost exactly zero), it is pretty much impossible to offer any meaningful opinion on this.

Price range?
Touchscreen?
Physical buttons?
Capacitive buttons?
Form factor?
Flash?
HDD?
Expandable storage?
Recording?
FM?
Inputs?
Outputs?
Color screen? Monochrome screen?

As you're probably realizing just now, there is a lot to consider.

With the information given currently, the best anyone (including myself) can do is point you to the list of supported devices on the main page and ask you to do some research yourself. If you are willing to, or can, clarify your requirements, it will be a lot easier to make a meaningful suggestion for you.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Thanks Saint.
Price range: 100-150$
Storage size: at least 16 Gb, natively or via SD card.
These are the only necessary requirements to me.

I don't know about any newer DAPs that have been made to work with Rockbox, but my absolute favorite Rockbox-able device is the Sandisk Sansa Fuse (not Fuse+). I have a v1 and a v2. They come with 8gb max (I believe) but are expandable via microSD. They have a form factor similar to the "fatty" iPod nano 3rd generation. They are not being manufactured any more so you'll have to look on eBay. Beyond that, there is the Sansa e200 series, also from Sandisk. These are older than the Fuse, so you'll again have to look on eBay and similar sites.

For devices still being made, the Sansa Clip+ and Clip Zip are nice, but they are extremely small devices and perhaps not what you're looking for.
