Data abort at 0049144 & Random freezing
« on: June 07, 2006, 02:04:47 PM »
Hi  There!

First thank you for the excellent firmware replacement.

But how should it be, some bugs are there.
I am using this version:

rockbox-jbuild-20060523-ipodcolor.tar.gz
(http://forums.rockbox.org/index.php?topic=4417.0)

and my problems are:
Data abort at 0049144 & freezing both randomly

What is it and how could I fix it?

My Ipod:
Gen 4, 20gig color display

Thanks for your help

Well, for one thing, please, don't report bugs unless they happen in the official CVS.
You're using someone else's patched build. While the random freezing occurs in CVS, the data abort could easily be caused by some of his patches.

I have iPod Color 20g, Rockbox latest CVS build and I get 'Data abort at 00048568' after about an hour of playing some music (mostly MP3s CBR/VBR, 128 and higher). It's not only one bad CVS, but it occurs since a build which was about 2 months ago. I'm not sure, if it's at 00048568 every time, but it appears almost every time I listen to my music. I can do some tests like the duration of time it plays ok to the error or whatever will be needed, just tell me, how can I help to fix this error.

Update:latest data abort came after 42 minutes of playing one album (MP3,VBR)

Hi there!

So, I changed to the latest CVS build (mine was: rockbox-ipodcolor-20060608.zip) without any patches, direkt from the Rockbox server.
And?
I got even here

Data abort at 00048568

Ok, now an other range, but it still aborts.
There must be a bug.

What's wrong?

My Ipod:
Gen 4, 20gig color display

Thanks for your help

PS It hung up after 10 min. of playing

More details, please. What kind of codec did you use? Can you reproduce the crash consistently on one special track? Do you have EQ/crossfeed or anything enabled?

Now it changed (last 10 days builds), the 'Data abort' message doesn't appear, but the screen and whole iPod 'only' freezes -> restart. The freeze is random, doesn't matter how long it plays. It can be 3 minutes, it can be even 70 minutes.

Now some details:

codec: MP3 - lame (VBR, CBR-128,256,320,...)
EQ and crosfeed disabled
tagcache disabled
as I said, freezing is random, I can't reproduce it on any song

P.S. sorry for the late response

Hi There,

i'm using Rockbox now since a few weeks. Same problem here. I installed the version from rockbox-ipod4gray-20060715.zip, what can be found at the download page und my iPod (4th generation, 20 gb).

It does not matter, what file im playing. Sometimes i get a data abort, sometime it only freezes. I can't shut the iPod down via holding play, i have to reboot the iPod via holding Menu+Select.

Sometimes this error occours three times within 20 minutes, sometimes it occours only one time within a few days.

The first time, my iPod didn't respod to my commands, was after recharging the battery over the night. It was freezed. The same day was the first day, i got the first data abort.

I'm using crossfade (gapless replay).

I think it might be helpful to put together a testing config that folks can load so that testing is (more) uniform.  Maybe even put together a simple wps (no peak meters, etc).  Any ideas?

Also, I think part of the problem is that most of us dumbass users don't have a clue what information is useful to the developers.

Off the top of my head, I'd think these were important:

Build (BTW: I wish a date/time stamp could be incorporated into the filename generated by make zip)
Codec
Bitrate
Playback settings (Crossfade, etc.)
Playback mode (shuffle, repeat song, etc.)
File view (ID3 via tagcache or file browser)
Sound settings (EQ, etc.)

Help us help you!!!

Actually, there's absolutely no need for a testing config, because if you go to Manage Settings, and choose to reset the settings, then shut down and boot up your player, you have the default settings loaded.

Downside: Peakmeters on the WPS.

There is a link in my signature that leads to a rather lengthy post where I'm perhaps a bit long-winded and repeat a few things, but it explains the kinds of information we want most from testers, as well as going into why we need some of it, and why it can be really next to impossible for us to fix bugs without it sometimes.

the bottom line is this is still an issue, and has not been fixed and barely acknowledged, it happened as soon as I upgraded and is a bug within the official release. Clearing settings does not help whatsoever, I am going to try downloading an older version of rockbox and swap out of the mp3 codec, but I doubt this will work either. Is rockbox dead or something or has there been an official fix yet?

You're responding to a thread from 12 months ago, and it WAS fixed.

What bootloader version are you running?

yeah I understand the thread was old, multitasking here, was about to edit my thread and didn't expect such a quick response.

at any rate:

This is a method I used to fix the issue and I realize the problem lies within the bootloader, I apologize for the hasty posting.

Use the Rockbox utility to uninstall the old bootloader and reinstall the new one and it should work. I understand the utility is somewhat use at own risk (as is everything in regard to homebrew), however it worked for me and I'm no longer having any issues and I'm very happy with the latest build of Rockbox. Thank you very much and I hope anyone else having this issue can fix it easily enough.
