Dead Nano 4gb
« on: June 07, 2006, 06:45:32 AM »
Hello All, I just tried to install Rockbox on my Nano and now have one very dead machine, I followed the instructions to the letter and can't think of anything I could have done wrong. I got to stage "f" Install the bootloader You can now disconnect... etc etc..., I then saw the contact apple.com error screen, this was then followed by the battery indicator ( showing quite low life ) and then zilch. Plugging the device into the usb port of my pc doesn't register with XP ( no remove hardware icon in the tray ) absolutely dead !!!, anyone any ideas ? could it be that the battery is just flat ? I can't charge it via usb as it's not being seen as a usb device by Windows, any help greatly appreciated

Plug it into the USB plug.
Hold Menu+Select both for a while (it can take several seconds, sometimes longer than you expect) until the screen flickers, and maybe shows an apple logo. Either will do.
Then hold Select+Play.

This will bring you into emergency disk mode, from which you should be able to do "ipodpatcher -w N bootpartition.bin" to restore it.

But I have to tell you, you did _something_ wrong with the bootloader installation if you got this error.

Hello Llorean, whilst your advice got me into "disk mode" I still have an unusable Ipod, what's happening now is the ipod keeps rebooting, the cycle is as follows: 1) Shows a battery icon in mid screen with an exclamation mark, 2) Shows contact apple support etc.., 3) Do not disconnect, this continues until I turn it off, I don't know what I could have done but I fear the pod is totally !!!!ed, any suggestions much appreciated. Whilst typing this the pod has cycled at least 50 times, If I disconnect the usb cable the display shows a large tick and Ok to Disconnect ? totally confused !

regards

Okay, how far was 'that worked' referring to in the previous post? Did you succesfully restore the original iPod firmware like I told you to?

Also, if you put it into disk mode like I described, you should be able to use the Apple restore tool on it (though that clears any files on it too) if necessary.

Hello Llorean, I tried using the Apple restore tool but it reported "Internal Error", I then tried restoring the iPod firmware ( as per your suggestion ) but received a "not Apple OS" or something like that. Eventually I uninstalled then reinstalled the iPod updater ( as suggested on the Apple site )  and that finally got the little bugger up and running again ( I had backups of all my music ). However I'm still interested in using Rockbox, I list below the install steps I took last time, and would be very grateful if you clarify them for use on an iPod 4gb

1) ipodpatcher 1
2) ipodpatcher -r 1 bootpartition.bin
3) ipod_fw -o apple_os.bin -e bootpartition.bin
4) ipod_fw -g nano -o rockboot.bin -i apple_os.bin bootloader-nano.bin
5) ipodpatcher -w 1 rockboot.bin

many thanks

3) should be ipod_fw -o apple_os.bin -e 0 bootpartition.bin
