Fuze+ Utility Install Failure
« on: January 18, 2014, 03:45:12 PM »
I just acquired a refurbed 4GB Fuze+ and am attempting to install RB (I've previously used RB on an original Fuze). I have placed the F+ in MSC mode, downloaded and unpacked all of the requisite bits and run the utility. However, after ejecting the F+ and rebooting, it still boots to the original OS.

When I inspect its file system, I see that the .rockbox folder gets moved as a subfolder under System Volume Information, which seems a departure from the original Fuze file structure (with RB).

When I examine the root of the F+, there are a bunch of IDX, DAT and TXT files, so that causes me to wonder further why the .rockbox folder gets moved—even if I manually move it to the root, eject the F+ and reboot it.

I've also tried a manual install, but cannot locate the mx_____ (or whatever) file needed to compile the replacement sb firmware. What happened to it?

More importantly, how can I successfully install RB on this F+?

Did you install the bootloader?  Might be a good idea to post the entire install log from rbutility.

FWIW, i think the System Volume Information folder is a windows thing used for its restore points.

The System Volume Information folder is onboard the Fuze+ (designated by Windows as drive F: on my PC). It is not a subfolder component of my Windows OS folder hierarchy. The SVI folder is where the .rockbox master folder consistently appears (as a subfolder of SVI), even after I manually attempt to move it to the root of the Fuze+.

I don't see where the RB Utility created a log file (and my PC is set to show all files and file extensions). During one attempt, the utility did make it appears as though it was installing the bootloader, especially since I had taken the requisite steps to download the original .sb firmware file from a SanDisk site and then pointed the RB Utility to its specific location on my PC.

Like I wrote earlier, I've even downloaded the RB patch file in an attempt to manually create my own patched .sb boot file, but then could not find the "make patch" executable on the RB site as that link to its download location is broken. If I knew where the "make patch" EXE is located, then I could go ahead and "roll my own" bootloader (just as I did back in the olden days with my Fuze).

There is no log file, just the log you can copy from the help menu in rockbox utility.

FWIW, if you have a lot of random folders on your fuze that you're not sure should be there, it might be a good idea to check the filesystem for errors.

No random folders... this is a "new" 4GB refurbished unit to which nothing has been transferred as of yet. The folders are those that the original FW creates for music, photos, video, recordings and the like.

I tried the utility again and created my own log file. That was unnecessary, as this time it WORKED!   :D
