Installing with IpodLinux
« on: June 06, 2006, 08:28:04 PM »
Another quick point to make is that it seems to only work when you follow the steps while booted into the Apple OS, so if you have Linux, it doesn't seem to work if you're booted into disk mode.  Maybe a problem getting the apple OS out of the bootimage?

Just FYI.

If your iPod is in Linux, you can't access the disk, can you?

I was led to believe that iPodLinux didn't have a proper USB driver, and uses disk mode just like we do.

Also, that's how you're suppose to access the original firmware, by holding menu. If you've installed Linux properly alongside Rockbox, holding Play instead of Menu will have Linux boot.

If you already have Rockbox installed, you need to shrink your fat32 partition enough to create an ext2 or ext3 partition, put the iPodLinux filesystem on it, and put the kernel bin file in the fat32 partition named, I believe, linux.bin.

As you've been asked several times in other threads, can you make an attempt to use proper English.
The primary concern is using real words like "I will" instead of "ima" and "that" instead of "dat" as those are the most likely to cause problems with non-native English speakers.

The Ipod linux available at ipodlinux.org (of which I'm sure you're more then familliar with) also uses disk mode.  A couple of tricks that I've used to make accessing it more easy is:

1 - I use L-Tools
<http://www.it.fht-esslingen.de/~zimmerma/software/ltools/ltools.html>
to load files from my windows machine to the ext partition on my nano.  The .net version seems to work the best on XP.  Very slick.

2 - I typically create a symbolic link (again, with Ltools) from my ext lib partition to a folder on the larger fat partition.  This way, I can just drag and drop modules from windows.  Seems to work alright so far.

This is probabily old hat to you gurus.

Best,

If you're using Linux then you've already got the iPodLinux bootloader installed.

The Rockbox installation instructions are for a clean iPod. If you're using Loader 1 it should be removed first. If you're using Loader 2, you simply need to extract a rockbox archive into your fat32 partition and it should work.
