It's been pretty widely discussed in the forums, and it's a good idea to search before asking. Also, if you type "patch" into the search box at the front of the rockbox.org page, one of the pages you'll see is named "WorkingWithPatches" which is a good clue that it's what you want.

i didnt understand a word of "working with patches page" i found this though :

and since i want to apply the album art patch, im guessing i have to put that code in somewhere, where do i do that?

Well, you have to apply the album art patch.

Have you set up the tools to compile your own copy of Rockbox yet? This is necessary to apply patches.

but i dont want to make anything, i just want to install a theme, and it says i need album art patch.

And to apply patches you have to compile your own build, as I said.

i downloaded patch 2.5..bla bla

and diffutils like it said on the workingwithpatchespage, now how do i do it?

Have you set up what you need to compile first?
As I said, you have to be able to compile before you can patch.

Well, patches are features that aren't done well enough yet to be used in the official build (or in some cases things not wanted in the official build, though Album Art is more the former).

So, really, they're intended for developers only in almost all cases.

Jude, depending on what ipod you have, some people have precompiled patched builds available.  Search around this forum to see what's available.

There is no expectation that users should have to patch, by any means.
Patches are there while things are being developed, and as a means for people to contribute to the project. The Album Art patch will definitely be included eventually, but there are still some barriers, and until then many people have taken the steps necessary to use it in its current form.
