Potential new Brickmania bitmaps, attempt two
« on: June 03, 2006, 02:09:47 AM »
Hi all,

Thanks for all your votes and suggestions on my old Brickmania bitmaps poll. I decided to start from scratch with the bitmaps again tonight, and came up with something I really like (considerably more than both the current bitmaps and the ones I proposed a couple weeks ago). I took all of your suggestions into account and I hope you'll be pleased with these ones. :) Please have a look and vote, suggestions/comments are entirely welcome.

What I like about them is that the blurriness of the ones I proposed a while ago is entirely gone (in fact these look even sharper than the original bitmaps to me) but the bricks still have depth (highlight along the edge) - they also have a very subtle texture to them, as a real brick does.

There are two versions here: a lighter and darker version. You should specify the one you like best with your vote. :)

Thanks for viewing. :)

I voted for the new darker ones. Nice work!
I choose the dark ones because bricks aren't supposed to give off light ;)

Thanks for the reply, petur, and the votes from all. :)

So it seems, surprisingly to me, that a number of people still like the old ones. Can I ask why? Can I get any suggestions or feedback?

I voted for the old ones.

I just prefer the... Texture? Shading? whatever.  The 3-dishness of the old ones.  The new ones seem... flat.  I know, they're bricks, but you're making them disappear by hitting a perfectly elastic ball into them with a floating paddle, so why should they be flat?

The problem I have with the old ones is that the shadow on them couldn't exist the way it does unless the surface of the brick were actually curved, and even then it's identical on each of them which would require very precise (and very very very very distant) positioning of the light source.

The dark ones actually look like real bricks. but, like i said in the other brickmania topic, they would look a lot better on a lighter background (if it's possible)

I guess the new ones aren't "real brick"- and "3D"-ish enough for you guys, so...

I'll work on them more tonight and increase the depth.

Midkay: You do realise that at the time of my posting in this, there were 12 votes for new bricks vs 7 for old ones. Just because it was 6/6/7 doesn't mean the new style didn't win.

Also, I don't think a white background would look good at all. Just me, though.

My 2 cents:

why the old ones? (I voted for them). As far as I am concerned, I do know it is not a true 3D, the shade is unrealistic etc. - but it's much more... arkanoid.  8)

It's much more 80's, old Atari 65 XE and all that stuff. :) Everybody who feels it - just feels it, I guess.  8)
That arkanoid needs to have a strong texture on bricks and _black_ space - just as it is.

So please - probably sth can be done with the bricks to make a "golden" texture satisfying almost everybody - but please eave the space black. :)

If anything they look more like the ones I voted for, the lighter ones.

Also, what does "sth" mean? Is that "something"? It seems an awful short abbreviation of the word, considering the sheer volume of letters dropped.

Ah, that is true. As far as a white background - not gonna happen. I also think it will look awful, and it'd require a LOT of work on the bitmaps.

I think I'll today put up one last poll with a new revision of the bitmaps. The darker ones are apparently the most popular, so I'll have a dark revision of *these* ones, and a similarly dark new version that are "more bricklike"... whichever wins that poll (by more than a little) I think should be the ones to keep or be committed.

Oh, certainly, sth stands for something. It's a common (U.S. English regular  8)) abbraviation used in European English and I thought it is obvious... nice to know it's not, anyway.  8)

Btw, sb = somebody.  ;D

European equals rather "continental" as Britons would say. :) However I am pretty surprised with the unpopularity of this abbreviation. Just out of curiosity - is it used or not - in particular countries?

Not seen it before in British (English!) English.
