Car adapter mode: turn ON plus off
« on: January 04, 2014, 09:47:07 PM »
Hi
I have a venerable old Archos Recorder V2 with an old (but unknown) version of Rockbox installed.  In "Car Adapter Mode", it not only pauses on power off (and turns off after 1 minute as set under "Idle"), but also powers on and resumes play when ignition power is restored (OFF+ON).  The perfect car companion :-)

Archos has died a noble death in service, and I am trying to substitute a Toshiba Gigabeat F40.  This player has the most recent version of Rockbox installed.  In Car Adapter Mode, the player pauses when ignition  is turned off, but will not power-on and resume as did the Archos (when ignition is switched on again) (OFF-No-ON).  This is also stated in the manual- it will pause (and idle-power-off), but must be manually turned back on.
The basis for my questions:

1) Is the OFF+ON behavior unique to the Archos (and not the Gigabeat)?  Perhaps, but the current manual for the Archos now says OFF-No-ON as well.
Therefore,
2) Is the Off+ON behavior valid only for old versions of Rockbox?  How old?

Perhaps there is another factor.  Any help would be appreciated.

Its been so long that I can't remember how the gigabeat works.  Are you using the USB or the regular power plug to try and turn on the player?

I know the Clip Zip works for "on" with power under current Rockbox, so I'm guessing it just isn't something the Gigabeat will do?

It's been a while since I've seen a non-reflashed gigabeat, but IIRC that one goes into a flash bootloader charging mode when powered on (actually, the flashed rockbox bootloader that's somewhere on flyspray also does that...), so unless you're willing to develop and run potentially device-bricking experimental code, I'm afraid this is just the way it is for that particular model.

I'm afraid this is just the way it is for that particular model.

I thought this as well, until I saw the reverse for my OFF+ON Archos - the manual for the latest Rockbox version says only 'Off+no-ON" whereas earlier manuals said "OFF+ON".  Made me wonder if the newer Rockbox code was the difference.

But you are correct - when power is applied, the Gigabeat goes to charging mode, not power on.  I hoped the Car Adapter mode would change that behavior - as it did for the Archos.  Might be worth a re-install to find out :-)

My question is: is it possible to download old versions of Rockbox?  I mean 2008 era?
Thank you for your learned assistance. Most appreciated.

I think you misunderstood gevaerts. The actual Rockbox version has no influence on how the bootloader operates so while you can download older releases they won't change anything.

If you want to insert a song into the currently playing playlist, then long hold select on the song to open the context menu, then select insert next* or queue next*  Queue will remove it from the playlist once it has been played, insert will leave it.
