Question About iPod Classic (5.5 Gen) with SD Card Mod Performance with Rockbox
(1/1)
Illustrator76:
I have heard people complain that the biggest issue with the iPod Classic 5.5 gen with Rockbox was that it was very slow and that the battery life was bad (this being the iPod's fault, not Rockbox). I was wondering if I performed the mod on the iPod where I removed the hard drive and replaced it with an SD card would improve the performance and battery life with Rockbox installed? I don't want to have to wait a few seconds (or possibly more) to skip from track-to-track or album-to-album and I would like to have a battery that lasts as long as possible.
My other option would be to just get an iPod Classic 7th generation and Rockbox it, because I heard that the speed and battery life of that model is greatly improved. Should I just go that route anyway and still do the SD card for hard drive swap on the iPod 7th generation, or would the iPod Classic 5.5 gen greatly improve in performance with the mod I suggested?
Thanks in advance for any and all help given!

I don't know if you can put an SD card in given the interfaces available on those players but our wiki and previous threads have a lot of information about adding SSDs.

I found a place where a bunch of people over on Headfi have ordered from, and they do have kits that allow you to install SD cards on generations 5-7.5 of iPod Classics. I just wanted to know if it will greatly improve the speed and battery life of a 5.5 generation iPod Classic with Rockbox before I go through and order everything.

i have been using ipods 5.5 with a 240 gig drive installed for over 6 years now. it has about one gig free so it is pretty much full. i can tell you the battery time on it is just fine and the time it takes to go from song to song is not several seconds and rather quick. in my experience if anyones ipod 5.5 is so slow and so bad with battery you have to use itunes to do a full restore and then reinstall rb and your entire mp3 collection and you should have no problems. you may have to change the battery depending on how old it is though, but that is true with any device that uses a rechargeable battery.
