Ipod problems can someone help me with rockbox?

Well, it's possible that the same whatever is preventing the restore from succeeding each time.
But as I said, if he followed all of the Rockbox installation instructions, and that didn't work, then restored and that didn't work as well, by that point the options are much more limited, since the Rockbox installation method doesn't involve iTunes or Apple Restore at all.
Of course, if he screwed up part of our installation instructions (also possible) then the two things are different problems entirely.
He should probably try restoring his iPod on another computer, you're right.

Digitallystuck did mention "mac", so that's not going to help my diagnosis at all, but I have to agree with Rasher. I've had problems with older versions of iPodUpdater / Restore utility. Latest one fixed a recent problem.
I've also had problems with other mp3 players boot partition (archos). Could he have messed up something when applying all the bootpartition.bin stuff?
Digitally... does the iPod get recognised on your PC/MAC in disk mode (ie. not with iTunes open)? Have you tried the latest iPodUpdater when in forced iPod Disk Mode (ie. Menu+Select > Menu+Play)? The restore utility *should* fix everything... so assuming you use the latest version, and it allows you to go through the whole process (with a "complete" message)... then chances are... the HD is screwed.
