Ipod problems can someone help me with rockbox?
« on: May 31, 2006, 09:18:00 PM »
I have a 40 gb ipod ( the greay screen with blue backlight) i have tried to format it, restore it, reset it, etc ( all the stupid steps) here is the problem. Lets say i run the apple "restore" then it tells me to plug into the "power supply" at which point it boots up to a FOLDER with an ! on it, if i plug the ipod up, itunes will sync songs to it just fine, but when i eject, and restart the ipod, back to the folder with an ! on it.

I have ran the HDD tests and etc on the ipod, i am open to ideas of how to correct it and put rockbox on it

Wait, does it do the ! folder after restoring it? Is that what you're saying?

Please, explain the whole problem, as you've just sorta put a lump of things you've done and problems you've had together and not given any sort of clue as to what order you've done things in, and under what conditions the problem occurs and what ones it doesn't.

Ok here is what happened, i put rockbox on the ipod, then i turned the ipod off, and back on, i got the apple symbol and then, the folder with the !, at which point i tried to use the "restore" utility now the ipod still starts up to the folder with an ! , if i plug the ipod in, itunes will sync and try to copy songs to it, but if i restart it now, i get the ! what did i do wrong?

Well, first off, you did something wrong during your installation of Rockbox. You screwed up a step somewhere. Unfortunately, I couldn't say where, seeing as any of many steps done wrong, or accidentally skipped, could cause this problem.

At least until the restore. The apple restore removes EVERYTHING from Rockbox, so if your iPod still has problems _after_ the restore, there's actually something completely unrelated to Rockbox going wrong.

As I said, if it happens after you use the Apple Restore Utility, then it's hardware failure. Possible bad sectors in your iPod's disk in the firmware partition, or something. It's hard to say.

Have you tried restoring it again, to see if maybe it didn't complete properly?

Well, if your iPod won't restore properly there's something else wrong with it.

ok, so what do you suggest? im fully aware that "something is wrong with it" it would be nice to have some more info on this, anyways to format the original firmware?

What do you mean by "Format the original firmware?"

Also, by "wrong with it" I mean physically. As in, something you can't fix.

I'm afraid I'm going to be horribly vague, since my knowledge of Ipods is very limited, but I'm quite sure that your problems don't neccesarily have to be hardware problems. It could be, but I believe that a combination of Windows hiccups and faults in the restore procedure can cause the problems you mention.

At any rate, this is totally unrelated to Rockbox. Try Apple's Ipod support before declaring your Ipod completely dead.

Edit: Are you by any chance using the restore program that came on the CD? If so, you may have luck by downloading the latest and using that. I seem to recall that as being the cause of the troubles that constitute my one experience with Ipods ever.

rasher: I could believe that unless he's being honest about the "Tried restoring it 10 times." At that point, you have to assume that something else is preventing the restore from succeeding.

Well, if it's a Windows/Itunes/Ipod restore/whatever problem, restoring it a million times would still give the same error, so I don't think hardware problems is the only option. Not by far.
