So the zip file you are feeding the player contains a file called "rockbox-info.txt"?  I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess you did not download that from Sandisk, and that its probably not what you think it is.  If you go and download a firmware update from Sandisk and use that, does it work?

Which, in contrast to the previous one doesn't show an error. Did you get an error displayed? And did the bootloader install now?

I just realized that you're the guy who said his player wouldn't accept sandisk firmware updates at all.  Is that still the case or did you fix that problem?

I remember your message, and I honestly have no idea how to tell whether it can or can't.

I've tried repairing the clip zip on a mac, which results in it saying it worked.

I'm using the rb installer with the sandisk firmware (see above).

After that, I really have no idea...

Ok, lets be 100% clear here.  You take a different version of the sandisk firmware than you currently have installed and copy it to the player.  Do you see the firmware update screen?  After rebooting, what version is installed?

Same as before.

It seems the step I'm missing is copying the firmware to the player. Yet when I look at the disk via terminal there's a .rockbox folder on the player and the .cpzpa (or whatever it's called) as well.

Install fails because it can open the files.

I can select it when using the rb utility or I can unzip it and copy it to the player, I've tried the .zip and the .bin. From my mac or from the player itself.

If the .zip or .bin are on the player the installer fails, saying it can't open the files. If it's on my mac, as you've seen, everything seems to work, yet then disconnecting the player and unpluging it results in the original firmware being loaded.
