H320-ROCKBOX ERROR (Result-4)
(1/1)
kennyrocks:
I dropped my H320 and now it wont load ROCKBOX :-[
I can boot to the Iriver Firmware and play music, so the HDD works..
The Drive is recognized by my PC, I formatted the HDD reinstalled ROCKBOX
But still yet it crashes with an error of Result -4 and turns off.
Does anyone have any ideas ?
I thought it was a HDD problem but it works fine and the iriver os plays music fine.
I'm confused.

That's odd....
Did you patch & load the Rockbox bootloader before you installed Rockbox to the HDD?
Well first--Before you do anything, please back up your music.
I'm assuming you've installed Rockbox on your player before, but if I remember correctly, there's a step where you need a copy of the original iRiver firmware in a specific folder so the Rockbox Installer can patch and load it. Not all players make you do this step.
The only other thing I can think of is to plug the iRiver into your computer and run a diagnostic on the HDD (like chkdsk or something)--scan for bad sectors or other errors and see if you can fix them. Then reinstall Rockbox from scratch.
If that doesn't work, reformat the HDD, install the original iRiver firmware, then install the Rockbox bootloader and Rockbox.
I think Error -4 relates to the player being unable to read a block of memory, but I don't know if it refers to the HDD or the built-in memory.

I tried everything and gave up..I bought a replacement HDD but when I fitted it and booted up the player it says Check HDD Connection..?? I am 99% sure I did not break anything or unplug the hdd connectors.. ANy ideas..I have searched the net and its a common problem with no solution.

My first idea with the "Check HDD Connection" error message is that it might be due to wrong formatting. IRiver and Rockbox both want to see the HDD formatted in FAT32. The standard formatting for modern drives would be NTFS, which doesn't work for our purposes. If you are on Windows, you'll need to download a formatting utility, since Windows no longer has the FAT32 option.
By the way, what hard drive are you using? Another possibility is that your hard drive has 4096 bytes per sector, while iRiver wants to see 56 (I think -- maybe it's 52). The larger sectors are common in newer drives, and to use them you must flash an updated bootloader. The simplest thing is to stick to drives with the original sector size specs.
Another possible pitfall is to get a drive designed for use in an Apple iPod. I've never learned what modification they have that makes them unusable for iRiver, but they have something. Look for a little Apple logo on the label on the hard drive.
Good luck!
