Trouble installing boot loader
« on: May 24, 2006, 11:42:36 AM »
When trying to find the drive number using ipodpatcher N regardless of the number I use I always get the same response (with the relevant drive number)

[INFO] Reading partition table from \\.\PhysicalDrive1
Error opening disk: The system cannot find the file specified.

I'm running windows 98se and could not find anywhere that said this was not compatiable. I'm using an 4g Ipod Colour. And it is shown in explorer as drive D

Any advice?

There might be possibilities. Like stated above make sure your logged on your computer as an administrator.

Plug your ipod into a different USB or FIREWIRE port.
Make sure your ipod has been booted into Disk Mode

If your problem still presists the only solution is to upgrade to windows 2000 and above.

Note: go to ipodlinux.org download the ipodlinux installer and use the installer to install the bootloader for you. Should be much faster.

>>downloads
>>ipodlinux installer v2.11 or v2.22b2 (not quite sure which one supports bootloader installation.

My friend  had this error ( i think) when i helped him install rockbox over msn, because i wasnt there, im not sure of the exact error message but it sounds the same, his ipod wasnt set to allow disk mode, so we set his pod to disk mode in iTunes, and then tried the ipod patcher again and it worked
hope this was some help :)

You cant log in in win98 as admin unless your on a domain, so this is irellevant

As it is showing up as a drive and has the circle with the cross through it and saying donot dissconnect I assume this means it's in disk mode.

Because it's windows 98 I cannot get itunes for this computer.

Upgrading to 2k is not an option as this is not my computer.

I'll give the ipodlinux installer a go.

Any further advice would be appreciated

It will come up as a disk drive even if it isnt set to disk mode, my friends did and so did mine, because thats what windows detects it as, my friends pod wasnt set to disk mode, and ur error message sounds uncanny in its similarity. when he set his pod for disk mode in itunes he had no problems and anyways if im mistaken the apple os is the only one tht says do not disconnect and that the disk mode is just a greyscale/monochrome small crossed circle.
If you've never set ur pod to diskmode it wont be in disk mode, the disk mode isnt a default, im just saying this is what my mate did , and as soon as he changed the option in iTunes he was able to install rockbox

I'm running windows 98 so installing iTunes is not an option.
I've tried forcing it in to disk mode (using the select and play button whilst rebooting. Which did give me the greyscale screen showing the circle with a cross through it, and stating do not dissconnect.
Still no luck.

Could i be using the wrong ipod driver. The driver i have is the windows 98 driver from the anapod website not the one from here http://www.98-drivers.com/ipod.html

Has anyone sucessfully installed rockbox in an ipod from a windows 98 machine?

Just a follow up to this I visited a friendly local internet cafe running windows XP today and sure enough everything worked as it should, and I'm now running rock box.

I still would like to know if anyone has successfully installed rockbox from a windows 98 machine

A internet cafe that allows people to use command prompt? wow, most cafes i have been have been networked and have disallowed command prompt because you can turn off peoples pc's using it (we did that a lot in college...., untill command prompt got disabled biatchs. just imagine the scene, some pompous kid mocks you and go's on about how great he is on the pc, then you shut down his pc from command prompt across the room, good memories)
ok i got off track then.

As for people using windows 98 to install rockbox, i dont even know anyone with windows 98 so i couldnt go and harass them to let me fiddle around with a rockbox installation.
It's cool that you managed to get rockbox in the end, and now you should be able to use normal explorer to get ur music on,
(windows 98 really isnt iTunes friendly? now thats plain stupid, naughty Apple)

wow, if you're stuck with something as bad as windows 98, try running linux (ubuntu or something). besides, the rockbox installation is easier with linux too.

Awkward problem you are having here. Just yesterday i installed the ipodbootloader for my friend. Which he is running Windows 98 (1st Edition). We used the ipl installer and all worked well. All i had to do is plug in the ipod before i booted up the computer since 98 doesn't have plug in and play.

If you still have problems no matter what you do then i suggest using a friends computer with 2k + on it.

Most of the independant internet cafes I've been to arround london allow you to get to  the command prompt even some that prevent opening windows explorer.

I've been using winamp with reasonable success to put music on my ipod, so not having itunes isn't all that bad.

I've always plugged in my ipod whilst the PC was running perhaps that was the issue.
