Export runtime data to another device? (Cowon X5)
« on: November 27, 2013, 04:10:32 AM »
Hi everyone!

I have been using Rockbox for a while now. Long story short: it is the best thing that could have happened to a frequent mobile DAP user like me!
Actually, I have several devices with Rockbox on them right now.
Two of them are a Cowon iAudio X5 and an X5L. I bought the X5L because I was annoyed by the short battery life of the X5.
I use the database and runtime functionality a lot, because that is how I like to organise my collection: by song rating, never played tracks etc.
If possible, I don't want to build up all that yet again from scratch on my new X5L, so I was wondering if I could export all the runtime info from my old X5 to my new X5L?
I know that runtime info like ratings are bound to the database, not the files. But if I make a 1:1 copy of the files from one device to another, would it work to also copy the runtime.db and make it work there?
Out of interest: would that work between different devices as well, for example a rockboxed Sansa Clip Plus and an iRiver H3xx?

Thanks a lot in advance!

Yes, if you make sure to include .rockbox

If you copy just the database files, that should work. Obviously you can't blindly copy the entirety of .rockbox then.

Hi gevaerts!
Thanks for your quick reply, that helps a lot!
Just to make sure I get everything right: I have to install Rockbox on the new X5L first, right?
Because when I install it, it creates that .rockbox folder with its content. The only thing I could do to include .rockbox is OVERWRITE the entire folder on the new X5L with that currently present on the X5. And that won't lead to a crash of Rockbox?

Thanks,

Up to you. You can do a full install and then move the database files across, or you can just install the bootloader and copy the entire .rockbox. Doing a full install and then copying the entire .rockbox (overwriting stuff as needed) also works, but that will overwrite everything anyway, so it's not really useful.

Isn't this type of thing exactly what Export/Import Modifications is for?

That spits out a nice file which you then copy to another device and import into the other devices database.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Hi [Saint]!

That's what I also thought when I scoured the Rockbox manual for any info on my issue.
However, I wasn't really sure whether that is what I'm looking for or not. I was a bit confused by the file name "changelog" and the description "new code cannot read old database code" - this sounded to me like it certainly won't work on another device.
If I understand the RB manual right: do I have to use the "export" function on the original device, copy the changelog.txt it to the same folder on the new device (connecting them both to USB), disconnect them and then use the "import" function on the new device? Is that about correct?

Thanks!

Hi again [Saint]!

I just tried what you suggested... and unfortunately, it does not work.  At least with 2 DIFFERENT audio players.
I used "Export Modifications" on my Cowon X5, transferred the changelog.txt to an iRiver H340, and used "Import Modifications" there.
There was NO CHANGE whatsoever afterwards. Still the same number of music files did not have any rating, although I had placed many more ratings on my Cowon than on my iRiver.
