Yes, car mode turns the player on/off with the car ignition.

Make sure you get a device with a stable enough port to have working USB however.  Car mode is often broken on devices that don't have working USB drivers.

Hi,
I recommend ipod gen5.5 i also recommend the slightly thicker 80gb (not 60 or 30) version because it is upgradable to 240gb later if you desire.
i have been using mine in car mode for over 7 years and even wrote a special screen for it.

i found ebay and this place

http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=16k-3-ipod+classic+gen+5+5,28zu0

to be the best place to buy refurbished ipod gen 5.5.

if you need i can send you my wps and special config files i made for car mode. but you will need the ipod gen5 or gen 5.5 for it to work right.

As far as I know the 5g turns on automatically when powered. This is a hardware feature, not something rockbox can control.

Well if you can't get it to turn on, then it doesn't matter what software you have but are not running.  The CPU must be on before it can run software.

On a 10 year old MP3 player?  Probably a lot of things.  Maybe check the cables and see if you can get it to power on from the dock connector.

I don't recall anyone having this problem before, but if you can find someone else who has, maybe they have a solution you can try.

That's a patch for detecting a charger. I don't think it's related to your issue. And anyway as I said before no software change will matter if the player is off.

You issue (almost certainly) points to one of two things.

1: Battery
2: Some form of severe board failure

1 is the obvious candidate, if you have never replaced this battery, it has most certainly reached the end of its useful life. It is also the cheapest option to replace.
If, however, the battery is NOT the cause...there is pretty much no point in reviving this device. It would cost more to replace the mainboard than it would to buy another 5/5.5G second hand.

The reason I present these two candidates as options is as such.

The iPods are rather robust, and can still boot when they are missing a fairly remarkable amount of hardware. The hold switch, the clickwheel, hell...not even the HDD are required for this device to boot. So a complete and total inability to boot in this device either points to something very obvious (battery), or something more sinister.

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

hm...
as i seen... and with my lucky... - its something sinister...
- player looks to safetly used.... - and it worked normal with any another function after manualy pressing "menu" or 'ok'

but... - tnx for some new one posibility to resolve my issue! - i'm try to find and change battery!... - and maybe... )
