I am trying to install Utility versr1.3.1.
First thing I see when I open the program is this message: Your configuration is invalid. This is most likely due to a changed device path. The configuration dialog will now open to allow you to correct problem.
When you click you select your device it comes up with this message: Configuration error: the following errors occurred: Mountpoint  does not extist: You need to fix the above errors before you can continue.
When you hit autodetect: it does this Rockbox Utility has stopped working: A problem cause the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program b& notify you if a solution is available. close program

I'm sorry.  You didn't say what operating system you were using so I was forced to assume.

If I was incorrect please correct all the missing details.

Don't auto detect.

Set it manually as I believe I instructed you to.

Does it still crash?

I am trying to install Utility versr1.3.1.

You are not trying to install Rockbox Utility but Rockbox. You cannot install Rockbox Utility, since it doesn't need to (and thus can't be) installed. This is a huge difference.

This isn't Rockbox Utility crashing when installing (as you claimed before) but when trying to detect the player. This is a huge difference. You don't need autodetection to install Rockbox using Rockbox Utility.

Also, I've asked you to try a more recent version of Rockbox Utility. Does that exhibit the same behaviour?

Seriously, neither I nor others are interested in pulling every detail out of your nose. Please answer the questions asked completely. If you keep asking for help like that people will stop responding.

I used the most recent version 1.3.1 yesterday & it crashed & it will not let me select the drive that is the MP3 player & keeps saying the mouthpoint  is not found. the autodetect is the only choice I have & it crashes every time.
do you think I might have a problem because I have Windows 8.¹

Please post the output of the Help / Troubleshooting / System Info dialog. And again, I've asked you to try another version. Have you tried that and does it exhibit the same problem?

how do I do this: Post the output of the Help / Troubleshooting / System  info dialog.

Open the dialog via the menu items I mentioned, select everything in the dialog that appears and paste it in your post.

I'm really about to stop responding. Read what I wrote before. I wrote:

Also, try a development version of Rockbox Utility. You can find it at http://tinyurl.com/rbutil-dev

Is there anything unclear about this? Is there anything that prevents you to click that link and download the version I mentioned from that link?

Open the utility.
Click "Help"
Choose "Troubleshoot"
Click "System Info"

***

I think you should take your player back to the other computer you used.
Do not use Autodetect.  Manually set the player type and drive letter as instructed in earlier posts.

This doesn't matter. Just. Do. It.

I'm really starting to believe that you don't want to get helped. I asked you to try a different version and you even failed to do that. Do what people are asking you for or I'm going to lock this thread since it doesn't lead anywhere if you're not able to do the basic steps you've been asked for. If you're that confused right now you're likely to be better of not installing Rockbox anyway.

Or you're trolling us.

The link I posted has (currently) two files. One is a zip file, and that's the file you need. It contains exactly one folder, and in this folder is exactly one executable file. That's pretty much the same as for the release. There's also the source code linked. You can also get that, but then you need to compile it yourself.

It would be really helpful if you directly stated what you did if things don't work as expected or you don't know how to proceed. Nobody but you can see what you did, and guessing around is really annoying.
