Remapping the function keys
« on: November 07, 2013, 04:39:52 PM »
I've only been able to find two articles about this, and it seems the only way to do it is to write your own theme.  Is this true?  I have an iPod 5th generation I believe, and have loved playing with Rockbox over the last few months since installing, but the way the function keys work is killing me.  Not to be taken as criticism at all, maybe I'm the backwards one, but it just seems there are far too many clicks involved when just doing simple navigation of playing tracks and looking through your library for a new track to play.  I have Rockbox because I believe in it over iPod, but the iPod way seems so much more streamlined, straight forward, and simple.  I cannot write my own theme, so is there something I'm missing......maybe in the shorcuts section, or another section?  Thanks!

Its not, themes don't change the buttons.  You have to edit the source code to do that.

Thanks for responding.  Sorry, I may not have used the correct terminology (and will probably screw up somewhere in this post again, so hopefully you can sort through what I'm trying to say).....is editing the source code something that can be done by myself, or is this something that is already writtin into the original system and cannot be changed by me?  And is this the only possible way of any sort of workaround?

What the buttons do is determined by computer code.  You can change that computer code, and then compile a new build and install it on your device, but this requires you to have some knowledge of programming.

Ahhhhh, shit!  Was afraid that was the answer.  Back to the drawing board, lol.  Thanks.

What do you actually want to change?

I wanted to remap it so it was more like my iPod's commands.  I'm not insuating that one is right and one is wrong, it's just I'm having an awfully hard time of ten years of constant iPod use of having my brain relearn Rockbox's and it's constantly taking me 4 clicks to do something that used to take me 1 click.  Over the last few days I've come to realize there are all kinds of short clicks and long clicks that do different things on Rockbox, and that there are even shorter ways to do it than the way Ive actually been doing it........but, just sayin',  if there was a setting that let me change it to what I'm more familiar with, I would.

Try again... What do you actually want to change if you could?

It could be very very simple to chage if you want to build your own build (not as scary as it sounds)

Shoot, yeah, sorry bout that.  Well I guess I'd start with something super simple.....basically I want to lift my finger as little as possible.  I haven't used the ipod version of it in awhile, but I seem to remember that my thumb only went back and forth between the menu button and the middle button to do just about everything, with exception being the click wheel ofcourse.  I want the menu button to always take me back one screen.  I'm not lazy, but when your walking and on the go and not always looking down at the ipod, and with how sensitive the click wheel is, it's easy to mess up.  I guess more or less I'd like the menu button to serve as what the back button does now through Rockbox.  There's a few more things just like that I'd like to do, but I'm afraid I'd be too long winded and confusing in trying to tell you what they are.  They're basically the exact type of simple command type things.

I'm not being rude here, but do you actually know what it is you're wanting to do yourself?

If you can tell us exactly what it is you would like to achieve, we can tell you how to achieve it.

Saint, it was just a quick reply of something basic I wanted to do to see if it could be done.  I know JdGordon said that building your own build is not that hard, but to me it sounds scary as hell, so I just put a feeler out there.  Yes, I could know what I'd want, but I'd have to take a few weeks of sitting down with it and writing it down.  If you give me that time, I can figure it out.  So if that's what it takes, I can come back in a few weeks with a more succinct, definitive four or five things I'd like to have different.
