Instalation problem using the R B Utilities on the SansDisk Clip Zip
« on: November 04, 2013, 01:52:12 PM »
I would appreciate if someone could give me some assistance please. Prior to installation I changed the USB settings on the clip to enable it to be identified as a drive letter on my computer when connected. In the utility it recognised the player and the mountpoint was showing the correct drive letter that corresponded to the player. I opted for the stable version that was already shown and un-ticked the games but selected some of the themes. I then clicked Install. The following message was shown :Bootloader installation requires you to provide a copy of the original Sandisk firmware (bin file). This firmware file will be patched and then installed to your player along with the rockbox bootloader. You need to download this file yourself due to legal reasons. Please browse the Sansa Forums' or refer to the manual and the SansaAMS wiki page on how to obtain this file. Press Ok to continue and browse your computer for the
firmware file.

OK   II   Abort

Checked the manual and there are no references to this particular problem. Am I overlooking something as I want to install the software automatically. Thanks

You're expected to follow the link provided and download the file.  Restart the installation, and this time download the file from the provided link.

Apologies for sounding ignorant could you please be specific as to the file location that I need to download and at what point am I supposed to download it. The manual does not cover this aspect and says I should be able to install rock box automatically. Thanks

The dialog box you're mentioning does have a link. You can click on it and it will open in your browser.

Is the dialogue box you are referring to the one that appears when you try to install the programme, which is called "prerequisites". This dialogue box refers to "Sansa forums", "the manual" and the "SansaAMS wiki page. If so, none lead me to an obvious link to the .bin file that's why I need the whereabouts of the link to be really specific. I was hoping that the process was automatic like the manual says but apparently this is not the case.

The wiki and sansa forums definitely have a link.  Manual might, too lazy to check.  Just pick one of those two and you'll be fine.

I'm getting quite confused here. I feel as I am asking a politician questions in that I never get a direct answer to the questions I asked. I have checked the manual and the SansDisk forums prior to asking the question in this forum. I don't know what precedes the .bin file so that I can identify it. Can no one provide a link to the file I require. If you are too lazy to check then I don't see why you bother posting a reply. Maybe I should stick with the software that SanDisk provided to save me and you, time and energy.

From what you've said you might be better off using the Sandisk firmware.

I feel like I should apologise for how this has been handled, although I didn't have any part in it. It bothered me.

I cannot broadly apologise for the Rockbox project, nor assume guilt for the actions of others, but I can offer my own support and acknowledge that this definitely could have been handled much better. Rockbox is a complex community and the actions of one do not reflect the intentions of the group as a whole.

I understand that some first time users may be incredibly cautious during installation and want to avoid any potential misstep. And I don't think this caution or want for a clear explanation should be a barrier to the use of Rockbox or a cause for apparent hostility.

Both the manual and the automated installer direct you to this SanDisk Forums page, and to some what you need to acquire from this page is not immediately apparent to some users. There are two offers to the user on this page, the one we are interested in is the section:

"Manual Firmware Update (All Regions) - Click here to download"

Which will provide you with a clipzip**.**.**.zip file, from which the firmware bin is to be extracted.

I hope this has made things clearer for you, and I again apologise for your introduction to this community.

Edit: Note - "**.**.**" represents the firmware version string, at the time of this writing the current firmware version string is 01.01.18

Using PMs to annoy devs about bugs/patches is not a good way to have the issue looked at.

Thank you very much Saint for your kind comments and thanks very much for the link. You are very right and I wholeheartedly support you when you say that new users are maybe over cautious and therefore afraid of the unknown.

Don't worry about the others 2 respondents as I am aware that they are not representative of the whole group. As in any large society you get a small minority who try to influence majority. They have not put me off installing Rock Box and will hopefully not put anyone else who wishes to do so.

Thanks once again Saint
