iPod Classic 7th gen

(1/1)

Major:
I’m trying to install rockbox on an iPod Classic 160 GB 7g and have not been successful. This question may be better suited for freemyipod but this forum is much easier to access. Hope you guys don't mind the request for help.
 I performed the following steps:
1.   Went to freemyipod.org and followed their instructions for installing emCORE
2.   Killed all Apple services
3.   Ran bootstrap_ipodclassic_itunes.exe
4.   Drive called "UMSboot" appeared
5.   Download the "installer-ipodclassic.ubi" file from the emCORE Releases page and saved it to "UMSboot" volume
6.   Ejected volume “UMSboot”
As soon as I ejected the iPod the following 3 lines of test appeared on my iPod screen.
1.   Loading UBI file
2.   Rearranging files
3.   Booting UBI file
I waited 15 minutes and the status never changed.  I reset my iPod and tried 2 additional times with the same results. NOTE: When I performed – (Press and hold the menu and select buttons for between 10 and 15 seconds - click here for a how-to video. The iPod will show an apple logo after about 5 seconds, keep holding the buttons until it seems to turn off completely The display of your iPod should now stay black, and a new USB device called "Apple Recovery (DFU) USB Driver" should connect to your PC.) I did receive an error message – Device IOControl:Error 31.  I went to device manger\portable devices\UMSboot and it stated “This device is working properly” so I continued with the process.

Any suggestions as to what I’m doing wrong or what the problem is?

user88:
try copying to the dfu partition the right .ubi for me it's called
installer-ipodclassic-r859-20120102.ubi
(maybe after restoring it with ITUNES and resetting it all over again)
If the apple logo appears I guess it's on the eMcore boot system not being successfully installed level.

from my personal experience It took some effort for me to get it to dfu mode (there should be also some file called bootstrap-ipodclassic-r859-20120102.dfu in the same dir of the bootstrap so Im glad you made it through)

for me it was installed the latest ITUNES and if the dfu works copy rockbox-ipodclassic-r31516-20120102 zipped from the emcore site (unzip it to the new partition that should appear (not DFU one)).

Hope it'll work for you, though, I messed a lot with it before it was fixed so I can't tell you exactly what is wrong...
Really hope It will become useful to you (the POD and the post)

Thanks for your reply.  I have played with it most of today and still no luck in getting the ubi file to work.

Going to try to do this on my 7th gen too. quick question - not familiar with rockboxing at all, but if I fail the install, can i restore my ipod via itunes, or is my ipod bricked?

If you follow the Freemyipod project's step-by-step installation guide verbatim, you should have no issues.

Almost every user I have encountered having issues with the installation has deviated from the instructions given in some small and sometimes non-obvious way (and sometimes large, and very obvious ways...).

Additionally, the same goes for the device hardware. As long as you don't deviate from the instructions given, and use the tools provided for their intended function, there is very little risk. It is certainly not free of risk - nothing is - the usual disclaimers apply of course, but to the best of my knowledge there have been no devices lost as a direct result of emCORE installation.

And yes. If for some reason you find you dislike Rockbox or feel that it isn;t meeting your expectations you can restore the device using iTunes (there is also a manual method of restoration for power users).
