I’m trying to install rockbox on an iPod Classic 160 GB 7g and have not been successful. This question may be better suited for freemyipod but this forum is much easier to access. Hope you guys don't mind the request for help.
 I performed the following steps:
1.   Went to freemyipod.org and followed their instructions for installing emCORE
2.   Killed all Apple services
3.   Ran bootstrap_ipodclassic_itunes.exe
4.   Drive called "UMSboot" appeared
5.   Download the "installer-ipodclassic.ubi" file from the emCORE Releases page and saved it to "UMSboot" volume
6.   Ejected volume “UMSboot”
As soon as I ejected the iPod the following 3 lines of test appeared on my iPod screen.
1.   Loading UBI file
2.   Rearranging files
3.   Booting UBI file
I waited 15 minutes and the status never changed.  I reset my iPod and tried 2 additional times with the same results. NOTE: When I performed – (Press and hold the menu and select buttons for between 10 and 15 seconds - click here for a how-to video. The iPod will show an apple logo after about 5 seconds, keep holding the buttons until it seems to turn off completely The display of your iPod should now stay black, and a new USB device called "Apple Recovery (DFU) USB Driver" should connect to your PC.) I did receive an error message – Device IOControl:Error 31.  I went to device manger\portable devices\UMSboot and it stated “This device is working properly” so I continued with the process.

Any suggestions as to what I’m doing wrong or what the problem is?

the only thing I can suggest is to open ITUNES so it restores your IPOD back to factory settings
and try again,
be sure you downloaded the latest emcore release
another point i already mentioned in the thread is to eject it from my computer and not the bottom toolbar.

hope you will succeed

p.s after the guys at emcore irc channel didnt answer me i burrowed in their irc archives and they said to install linux which i DO NOT recommend.

in conclusion I guess
1. if after reseting apple logo appeared you didn't install the emcore things right
2.read my post from the begining regarding the latest release and the ejection.

be sure you have the latest ITUNES its necessary for the restore.

As I replied In another thread I can't point out the problem because I messed with the first installations some days including uninstalling and reinstalling ITUNES.

but except playing with it a little more i cant give better advice

I only can say that rockbox on IPOD 7th gen is possible just sometimes (the first times) its a bit hard to figure out what went wrong with the installation.
As for me I use it already for already a month with all the benefits of RB and there are lot of them...
hope I didnt say here anything wrong (from some kind of legal or other aspect).(and it remineded me that if I am not wrong you should have some kind of legal screen in ITUNES and in the emcore software that says all the stuff they are not responsible to (demage ect( but as I said for me it works fine and I am very satisfied and hope you will solve your instalation issue too)))
The long reply Is because It happened like that.

if you can't solve the problem in two days consider maybe asking again with different description...
I reply only because it appeared In my email

Don't you think that the developers of the project in question know what they are talking about?

Fact is, Windows installation for emCORE is a royal pain in the ass...fraught with chances for a user to screw it up at every turn.

The linux instructions, however, "Just Work".

Its up to you...keep fighting with Windows, or, take the advice of the project developers. Not a very tough call if you ask me.

People need to get over the idea that linux is somehow complicated, or scary, or difficult.
Especially in this instance as all the difficulty faced is because of the choice of operating system used.

As for me I already installed and reinstalled the RB firmware with emcore about 4 times on windows just to understand what was wrong.

Linux as far as I know Is a great OS especially the redhat I think (dont grab me on the word) It is good for a big spectrum of tasks.

and all computer science people probably know it well, I too had one installed and have some inferiority complex I dont have time/knowledge to handle it.

besides the ubuntu I tried to install didnt have some drivers for my dell laptop and It stuck me.
Also using virtual machines didn't work for me well.

I went from a start point that the one who wants to install it is similar to me and I do think installing any new OS takes time literally and can take some other effort hence the quote you gave from my reply.

I do think however its my education gap I dont know to use linux especially without gui (I mean entering the commands in the command prompt or however they call it (i only remember you can use pipe | to "glue" two commands)).

in conclusion if you are computer guru linux is a must for you but i still think that most of the people won't install another OS on theyer home computer which probably came with windows

dont want to continue this argument because I really dont understand much in all this. and sorry it touched a painfull point (Besides reinstalling windows was a big pain too and took not little time after the ubutu messed with the drivers (however if i had more time maybe I could learn deeper This linux system which frankly seemed pretty fine exept the driver issues it even was similar to win7 from some gui aspects))

In general however I do think win7 Is easier then linux If you dont need to use linux for special computer tasks which win7 may really be harder to handle... (or in some cases impossible (luckly not this one (again don't want to continue arguing because of the arguments I gave above (That I don't know this field well))))

and you may after all be right with your reply:)
