You're right, a user almost certainly doesn't want to install a secondary operating system...luckily, they don't have to.

If you can burn a CD, or write an image to a USB removable disk, you can use <insert_most_linux_flavors_here> without touching any of the data located on the host machine. Reboot, back to normal. Magic.

I didn't comment here to argue possible scenarios about what a user may or may not want to do, however.

I commented in this thread to make it clear that if the developers of the project in question make a suggestion regarding an operating system to use, it is wise to take that advice, regardless of your feeling about the OS in question.

You've been lucky, you made it through, that's great - other people are not that lucky, and, believe it or not the suggestion was made because it does indeed drastically reduce the level of difficulty and possible fail cases.

didn't understand the <insert_most_linux_flavors_here> thing if it's easy and reliable way to start linux it is good to know about (if you don't bother to reply an explanation)

In broader look I've just looked through an IT forum and in the message from the moderators they kinda warn not to start arguments microsoft against linux beside some other tips. maybe its relavant to this thread and forum in general.

I touched two things and as you probably see iv'e nothing against linux except the inferiority complexes i dont master it (and as far as I know it has far more options for computer experts to play with).

I replied because it appeared in my e-mail I think this topic is close to be concluded.

The answer to this question is a Live{CD|DVD|USB}.
This allows a user to launch a secondary operating system without installing anything at all to the host, or modifying the host file system at all.

You seem confused.
It is as thought you are insisting there is an argument here, when there simply isn't one.

This is not a question of "Operating system A is better than operating system B", not at all. Nor am I attempting to make it so, if I was, it wouldn't be in any doubt. It is simply a case of using the best possible tool for the job, as suggested and recommended by emCORE's core developer(s), and frankly the right "tool" for this job is most definitely not a Windows variant.

This has absolutely nothing to do with favouring a particular operating system. It is not fanboyism. It is just a plain fact that the Windows installation instructions (for both possible methods) in incredibly convoluted (from necessity) when compared to the very straightforward Linux installation instructions, and it so happens that these steps present many additional points of failure to the user.

So, naturally, when users come to us for support via Freemyipod's support channels we are going to suggest the most straightforward and likely to succeed method, which involves Linux.

The link you gave is what I used in the first place from another site but thanks anyway (just checked it more thoroughly (the usb option (maybe it skipped the step of leaving the host without change))).
Maybe the second quote you gave was little maglomaniac from my side.
Let's agree that Linux is great OS just deleted the end of the sentense because I really got confused.

AlexP:
It is nothing to do with Linux being a great OS or not, or Windows being a great OS or not.  It is purely that in this particular case, Linux is the better tool for the job.

If you wanted to dig a hole in the ground, you would choose a spade not a hammer, but there would be no need to argue about which was the better tool overall, a spade or a hammer.
